G20 to integrate Caribbean into global value chain

WASHINGTON, DC, April 16, 2015 - Member countries of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) concluded their inaugural meeting with members of the G20 Development Working Group (DWG) in Washington DC on Monday, and welcomed the implementation of DWG and other G20 commitments noting that this will strengthen the development outcomes from these initiatives.

Cultural agreement being worked out with Cuba

A Cultural Co-operation Agreement is currently being negotiated between Barbados and Cuba.

This was revealed by Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley, who spoke at a press conference on the announcement of two young Barbadian artists, Ewan Atkinson and Alberta Whittle, who have been selected to participate in the Havana Biennial and the Venice Biennial respectively.

New PAHO/WHO network will monitor women and newborns in the Caribbean and Latin America

Brasilia (PAHO/WHO) — ON average, approximately 16 women die every day in the Caribbean and Latin America from complications of pregnancy or childbirth, while 250 babies die each day before having reached 28 days of age. To gather information on the causes of these deaths and contribute to policies for their prevention, the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) has launched the new CLAP Network of Latin American and Caribbean Centers for Maternal Surveillance and Research on Women’s and Neonatal Health.

On 10th anniversary, CCJ boasts of high quality of Court’s jurisprudence

The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) celebrates ten years since it began its operations as the exclusive court for the CARICOM Single Market and Economy and as the court designed to replace the British Privy Council as the final court of appeal for the CARICOM Region.

In this the 10th year of the CCJ, Dominica became the fourth member state to accept the court in its appellate jurisdiction to replace the Privy Council on 27 March of this year.

Barbados To Host CARIFESTA 2017

“Barbados will be hosting Carifesta in 2017.” 

Minister of Culture, Stephen Lashley made the announcement, yesterday, during a press conference at the Ministry’s Headquarters at Sky Mall, Haggatt Hall, St Michael.

According to the Minister, this ‘huge venture’ fits directly under the ministry’s mandate “to propel the growth of the cultural industries and to support our artistes.”

“We can reap significant dividends through the work of our artistes as they move across the globe, and our role in government is to support them.” he added.

Karim: T&T could be ‘growth zone catalyst’ for CARICOM

Tertiary Education Minister Fazal Karim says he believes that Trinidad and Tobago, with its hydrocarbon resources and financial prowess, could be a ‘pivot’ or ‘growth zone catalyst’ for the development of an integrated strategy for CARICOM.

Speaking at the 2nd International Conference 2015 of the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago he says with this country being the axis, one triangle could be formed with natural resource endowed countries such as Guyana, Suriname and Jamaica and another with service-oriented countries such as Barbados and the OECS.

Caribbean producers optimistic about new opportunities

The Third CARIFORUM-EU Business Forum opened in Montego Bay, Jamaica on Wednesday with calls for Caribbean countries to seize new opportunities offered by globalisation and improved access for the region to international markets.

The mood of optimism about opportunities for Caribbean producers, many of whom attended the conference, was summed up by Sharon Ffolkes Abrahams, State Minister of Jamaica, who delivered a keynote speech on behalf of the Jamaican Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller.

Haiti has frequently been cited as one of the bright spots in the world’s battle against HIV/AIDS. The country, the poorest in the western hemisphere, saw its rate of new HIV infections plummet by more than 50 percent from 2004 to 2012. AIDS-related deaths have also dropped significantly, while more and more Haitians with HIV are now able to access life-saving anti-retroviral drug therapy.

OAS and GECOM sign Observer Mission agreement for elections

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) have signed an agreement on the Electoral Observation Process of the 2015 General and Regional Elections.

The agreement was compiled by the OAS. The signing took place on Wednesday when the OAS Chief of Mission, Ms. Lisa Shoman visited GECOM Secretariat and held discussions with GECOM officials.

The agreement outlines the conditions under which the OAS will execute its electoral observation exercise, before, during and after the conduct of the May 11 General and Regional Elections.
