FACT SHEET: The President’s Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative and Programs to Support Youth Development in Central America and the Caribbean

(Thursday), President Obama launched the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) to expand opportunities for emerging entrepreneurs and civil society activists. Building on the success of the President’s young leader initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, YLAI will incubate and accelerate the work of young business and civil society leaders from Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States. YLAI will provide 250 fellowships each year to enable participants from the United States and the region to develop joint business and civil society initiatives.

UWI Faculty of Food and Agriculture hosts International Breadfruit Conference

ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago – It was British and French explorers who brought the breadfruit tree from the South Pacific to the Caribbean during the late 18th Century. As one of the highest-yielding food plants, with a single tree producing up to 200 or more 4 to 5 pound, nutritious fruits per season, experts consider it ideal for commercialisation. The University of the West Indies (UWI) certainly believes so and is hosting, through its Faculty of Food and Agriculture, the International Breadfruit Conference to be held on the St. Augustine campus from July 5 to 10, 2015.

Jamaica and US Sign Energy Cooperation Agreement

KINGSTON, April 10, 2015 - The Governments of Jamaica and the United States yesterday signed a Statement of Intent outlining the planned areas of cooperation on the development and deployment of energy-related technologies between both countries.

The document was signed by Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Hon. Phillip Paulwell, and Secretary of the United States (US) Department of Energy, , at a press briefing held at Eden Gardens Wellness Resort and Spa.

US president cautions against hopes of ganja legalisation

UNITED States President Barack Obama yesterday cautioned persons who have hopes of marijuana being legalised, as he explained the difference between legalisation and decriminalisation.

"We had some discussion with Caricom (Caribbean Community) countries about this. I know, on paper, that a lot of folks think that if we just legalise marijuana then it will reduce the money flowing into the transnational drug trade, [bringing in] more revenues and jobs created," the US president said yesterday.

Obama Announces US$70m Programme For Youths

The US will invest in young entrepreneurs and civil society activists in Central America and the Caribbean through an initiative that includes fellowships, mentorship and investment opportunities, Barack Obama announced during a town hall meeting with youth leaders from Jamaica.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Agency for International Development (USAID) will provide the The Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) $68 million to invest in an education program for disadvantaged populations in Central America and the Caribbean.

Trinidad &Tobago PM opens High Commission office in Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Wednesday opened the new High Commission office in Jamaica, during her visit to attend the Special Summit between Caribbean Community (CARICOM) heads of State and Government with US President Barack Obama.

“The symbolism of today’s event is very strong, and is steeped in the story of two nations that share a long, cordial history of growing together, working together and achieving together,” she said in her address.

Obama in Jamaica pays tribute to Bob Marley

Barack Obama has taken a tour of the Bob Marley museum in Jamaica after becoming the first US president to visit the country since 1982.

To the strains of the late reggae star’s One Love, Mr Obama was shown around the sprawling house in Kingston that was Mr Marley’s final home.

The US president said he was a fan of the musician, telling his museum guide: “I still have all the albums.”
