Jamaica taking steps to address environmental breaches – Minister Pickersgill

MONTEGO BAY, April 1, 2015 - Minister of Water, Land, Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Robert Pickersgill, says the Government is strengthening enforcement of environmental laws and has been taking steps to address breaches.

He noted that the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA), actively prosecutes offenders through the courts, using the provisions of the Natural Resources Conservation Authority (NRCA) and the Town and Country Planning Authority (TCPA) Acts.

How Much the Caribbean Needs to Spend on Science and Technology

Caribbean governments must devote at least 1 percent of their Gross Domestic Product to science and technology, according to Dr Cardinal Warde of the CARICOM Science Foundation.

Warde said that proportion was necessary for the region to make significant progress in this area.

Jamaica at forefront of environmental agenda, says PM Portia Simpson-Miller

MONTEGO BAY, March 31, 2015 - Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller, says Jamaica, as a small island developing state, has always been at the forefront of the global environmental agenda.

Speaking yesterday at the opening of the first ever Inter-American Congress on the Environmental Rule of Law, at the Secrets Resorts in Montego Bay,  Mrs. Simpson Miller said Jamaica’s presence on the global environmental agenda has been evident even before the 1970s.

Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba to develop multi-destination tourism packages

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Wednesday April 1, 2015, CMC – Trinidad and Tobago says it has signed a cooperation agreement with Cuba that will allow for the development of multi-destination tourism packages.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs here said that the agreement was signed in Havana by Tourism Minister Gerald Hadeed and his Cuban counterpart Manuel Marrero Cruz.

UNESCO African Ancestry Project to be Launched in Nevis

(NATCOM) – St. Kitts, April 1, 2015: In an information statement released by the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society (NHCS), Executive Director, Evelyn Henville said her organization is about to launch a project entitled “Educating the Population of St. Kitts and Nevis on Afro-Caribbean Ancestry” next Tuesday (April 07).

Ms. Henville stated that implementation of the programme otherwise dubbed “The UNESCO African Ancestry Project”, is a collaboration with civil society and the Ministry of Education after a request from the National Commission for UNESCO.

Grenadian businessman lauds ‘noble’ intention of CSME

St Kitts and Nevis (WINN): A leading Grenadian businessman says while implementation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy regimes may be slow, the intention behind these measures is noble.

Former Chamber of Industry and Commerce president Nigel John told WINN FM's The Bigger Picture the area of trade is one key example.

"In other words you get practice sending from Grenada to St Kitts first, before you send from Grenada to Canada," the businessman explained.

New Antigua-Barbuda to Turks and Caicos Islands connection

V.C Bird International Airport will serve as an important hub for UK based carrier British Airways, as the airline, on Sunday, launched their inaugural flight service from Antigua to the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The route is historic, as it will be the first, direct flight connection between the Eastern Caribbean and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
