ECLAC, UNAIDS sign agreement to support regional response to HIV-AIDS

SANTIAGO, Chile, Mar. 26, CMC – The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with UNAIDS Regional Support Team for Latin America aimed at promoting and facilitating cooperation on matters related to the regional response to HIV/AIDS.

Dietary Guidelines For Jamaica Established

KINGSTON, March 25, 2015 - Jamaica has joined six other Caribbean countries in implementing its own dietary guidelines with the aim of improving the nutritional well-being of citizens.

The Food-Based Dietary Guidelines for Jamaica, form part of efforts by the Government to provide nutrition and health-related recommendations to promote healthy eating habits and lifestyle in the population.

Ministry of Agriculture to Set Up Plant Health Clinics

KINGSTON, March 26, 2015 – The Ministry of Agriculture is to establish several plant health clinics islandwide as the Government ramps up efforts to address the issue of pests and diseases affecting crops.

The initiative comes under the newly launched “Plantwise” programme, which is being co-ordinated by the Commonwealth Agricultural Bureaux International (CABI).

Twenty plant doctors are to be trained in the management of the clinics and to provide service to farmers.

That dreadful period was commemorated yesterday as the ‘International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

Guyana/Venezuela oil exploration conflict…Guyana pleased at CARICOM support

As conflict between Guyana and Venezuela continues over offshore oil exploration in disputed waters, Guyana has expressed satisfaction at the solidarity shown by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Guyana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, told reporters yesterday that there have been no major changes in the matter.
However, the Foreign Affairs Minister expressed pleasure at CARICOM’s solidarity with Guyana on the matter.

St. Kitts and Nevis teachers to be trained on the CSME this week

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM), through the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) Unit, the Ministry of International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs, and the Ministry of Education are working together to expose secondary school teachers to the CSME and teaching skills aimed at influencing curricula.

Thirty secondary school teachers in St. Kitts and Nevis have been selected to attend a two day seminar on 26-27 March 2015. The event is made possible with funding from Canada.

Bassarath: ICC coming to region speaks to confidence in WICB

President of the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB) and West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) director, Azim Bassarath says that the fact that the International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to keep their annual meeting in Barbados, shows that they have confidence in the WICB.

Bassarath said: “This decision to come to the Caribbean for the annual meeting was taken after the issues we had with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It represented to me that the ICC still had faith is us as a major cricketing nation and they wanted to show that by coming here.”
