Education Ministry achieves milestone in TVET policy implementation

The Ministry of Education on Thursday, March 19, held a sensitization workshop to design, develop and pilot a National Qualifications Framework (NQF) for St. Kitts and Nevis. It marked another milestone in the implementing of the National Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Policy.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Ionie Liburd-Willett, stated that the workshop comes at an opportune time “as we continue to put in place measures and systems for the continued development and strengthening of education and training in St. Kitts and Nevis.”

Larger enterprises could potentially spend up to an additional $59,000 on staffing, $35,000 on training, and $75,000 on systems, the report said.

Prime Minister Heads To New York For Memorial For Slave Trade Victims

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller is slated to join other world leaders and government officials at the United Nations (UN) in New York today for the unveiling of the permanent memorial to honour the victims of slavery and the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. 

Simpson Miller made the announcement in Parliament yesterday and subsequently, a statement was issued by Jamaica House.

March 25 has been declared by the UN as International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.

Customs & Border control officers undergo Int’l Environmental training

Customs and Border Control officers from the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) are undergoing a three day workshop on the Enforcement of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs).

The workshop, which is being conducted at the GRA’s headquarters in Georgetown, is an initiative by CARICOM, the Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment (MNRE) along with a number of regional and local agencies.

The governments of Canada, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Suriname confirmed this week to the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) their consent to receive on-site visits as part of the Fifth Round of the Mechanism for Follow-up on the Implementation of the Inter-American Convention against Corruption (MESICIC) of the OAS.

An evolving relationship between President Obama and Caribbean leaders

Last month, as Antigua Prime Minister Gaston Browne welcomed his fellow Caribbean leaders to a two-day summit, he looked out into the audience and thanked Venezuela, China and Taiwan for their support.

“The governments extended a hand,” the outgoing chairman of the 15-member Caribbean Community regional grouping known as Caricom said to a backdrop of thunderous applause. “We will not forget.”
