UN Secretary General Hails Pm Harris’ Vision

Secretary General of the United Nations, His Excellency Ban Ki-moon, has praised Dr. Harris for his vision in creating a government of national unity that will chart the way forward for the twin-island Federation.

Caribbean community climate-smarting fisheries, but slowly

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Wednesday March 18, 2015, IPS - Caribbean nations have begun work on a plan to ‘climate smart’ the region’s fisheries as part of overall efforts to secure food supplies.

The concept is in keeping with plans by the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) to improve the “integration of agriculture and climate readiness” as the region prepares to deal with the impacts of climate change and the increasing demand for food.

UNESCO team pleased with TVET policy progress in St. Kitts and Nevis

A UNESCO team has reported that it is pleased with what has been accomplished with the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Policy.

During their recent visit to the Federation, Associate Evaluation Specialist Ekaterina Sediakina and Senior Consultant/Managing Partner Bert-Jan Buiskool explained that UNESCO was doing an evaluation of organisations working under the TVET policy world-wide and had selected St. Kitts and Nevis as the country being looked at in the Caribbean.

Martinique to host May 9th Caribbean Climate 2015 Conference

NEW YORK, May 7, 2015 —On Saturday, May 9, 2015, the French Caribbean island of Martinique will host the regional summit, Caribbean Climate 2015, which will be chaired by French President François Hollande. The summit will gather over 40 heads of state, governments and Caribbean organizations to discuss the impact of climate change on the island nations of the Caribbean. French Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, Mr. Laurent Fabius, will also be attending.

CARICOM Competition Commission stresses healthy diets in fight against NCDs

Healthy diets consisting of foods high in nutritional value must be the first step to remedying the problem of NCDs in the Caribbean, the CARICOM Competition Commission (CCC) said.

In a statement to mark World Consumer Rights Day observed on 15 March, the CCC said that given the high prevalence of NCDs in the Caribbean, it was only fitting that this year’s theme for World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) (observed on 15 March) was ‘Healthy Diets’.

Six Caribbean countries to benefit from new energy initiative

KINGSTON, Jamaica, (CMC) – Six Caribbean countries will benefit from an US$500,000 energy statistical capacity-building initiative that is being spearheaded by the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE).

Jamaica, Belize, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti and Suriname are included in the initiative that seeks to provide reliable and up-to-date data for the energy planning process as well as allow for analysis of the energy sector in an integral and strategic way.
