Trinidad and Tobago assumes OAS Permanent Council Chair

The Permanent Representative of Trinidad and Tobago to the Organization of American States (OAS), Neil Parsan, has assumed the Chair of the Permanent Council of the hemispheric institution, a position he will hold for the next three months and in which he follows the Ambassador of Suriname, Niermala Badrising.

Upon assuming office, Ambassador Parsan expressed the honour he felt at leading the Permanent Council and reiterated the “commitment of Trinidad and Tobago to the values and principles of the OAS,” which he promised to defend during his term.

Silver Jubilee Stadium to be renamed in honour of Kim Collins

Kittitian World Champion sprinter Kim Collins will receive a significant honour in the renaming of the Silver Jubilee Stadium as the Kim Collins Athletic Stadium.

PM Harris to attend CARICOM-US Summit

Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. The Honourable Timothy Harris, will be among Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government to attend a summit held between the Region and the United States of America in Jamaica on April 9.

Sustainable tourism key to Caribbean

Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy said preserving the region’s vulnerable eco-system was important, given the “many examples where economic development often takes place at the expense of our environment”.

Sealy, who is also Caribbean Tourism Organisation chairman, was speaking recently in Germany during the official launch of the Sustainable Destination Alliance for the Americas (SDAA). Barbados is one of seven countries from the region taking part in the SDAA’s initial phase.

Youth forum at UWI, Heroes Park visit on tight itinerary for Obama

United States President Barack Obama will maintain a tight itinerary during his visit to Jamaica this week.

According to Jamaican Government spokespersons, Obama, who is scheduled to arrive at Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston late Wednesday evening on Air Force One, will be airlifted on one of the helicopters in the presidential Marine One fleet to the Jamaica Defence Force’s Up Park Camp headquarters, from where he will be transported to the Jamaica Pegasus hotel in one of the 12 limousines in the presidential fleet.

Caribbean region being urged to support cash strapped CDEMA

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — The Barbados-based Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency’s (CDEMA) moved into a new US$4-million headquarters on Thursday despite a warning from the host country that the regional institution is “bleeding” and having difficulties in paying its day-to-day bills.

Barbados Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite, speaking at the ceremony to mark the occasion, called on 18 member States to lend their support to the agency. He gave no details of the amount outstanding.

The Skin makes regional site’s movies to watch list

A regional website, Caribbean & CO, has listed Antiguan film The Skin as one of 10 movies to watch.

The supernatural thriller by HaMa films will become a part of a Caribbean Film database which will be launched later this year during the 10th annual Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival.

The database will include feature-length independent Caribbean fiction, documentary and experimental feature films from 2000 to the present.

Haiti’s Essential Oil Producers Receive Best Practice Training

Haiti’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIH) organized a best practices sharing mission for experts from the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) in Haiti from 10 to 13 March 2015 with the support of The Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export). Haiti’s essential oils sector represents the country’s largest export sector, in particular the production of vétiver oil a main component in the production of fragrances and perfumes,  exported primarily to Europe and the United States.

Strengthen cooperation, unity in fisheries sector – Grenada agriculture official

A senior Grenada Government official has called for the strengthening of cooperation and unity in the Caribbean Region to develop, manage and utilise marine resources in a sustainable manner.

At the opening of the 13th Meeting of the Caribbean Fisheries Forum in St. George’s, Grenada on 1 April, Senator Simon Steele, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment of Grenada made the recommendations against the background of the varied challenges the Region was facing in the fisheries sector.
