Agricultural techs get training in Mexico

Agriculture technicians from the twin island state will once again be afforded the opportunity to further expand their knowledge in the field through specialised training provided by the government of Mexico.

Kishma Primus Almond of the Plant Protection Unit and Mario Beazer, of Barbuda, will leave the island next week to participate in a programme to provide training for Caribbean professionals.

It aims to promote a new kind of agriculture in the region that will make the sector more competitive and increase its contribution to food security.

Warm welcoming ceremony for CARICOM-US Summit

A warm and exciting arrival ceremony set the tone for the much anticipated CARICOM-US Summit at the UWI Regional Headquarters, , Kingston, Jamaica on Thursday 9 April 2015.
Host Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller was joined by the CARICOM Chairman, Prime Minister Perry Christie of The Bahamas and CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque to welcome the full CARICOM Team. The welcome party was then joined by the outgoing Vice Chancellor of the UWI Professor Nigel Harris and the incoming Vice-Chancellor Dr. Hillary Browne to welcome the United States President.

Jamaican, US Governments committed to successful visit by President Obama

he visit to Jamaica by the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama on April 8 and 9 is no longer being designated a State Visit, which had previously been agreed and communicated.

The change takes into account the time constraints of the short duration of the visit and the established nature of a State Visit in the Jamaican context.

Throughout the planning of the Visit there has been, and continues to be, continuous dialogue between counterparts in the Government of Jamaica and the Government of the United States.

Advocates to gather for historic Reparations Summit

Jamaica's junior athletes once again proved they are the kings and queens of the Caribbean with another dominant display at the annual Carifta Games after amassing 85 medals at the 44th staging of the championships which ended at the newly renamed Kim Collins Stadium in Basseterre, St Kitts, yesterday.

US President’s Visit Should Deepen Relations with Region

The visit of the President of the United States (US), Barack Obama, and the meeting with Heads of State and Government of CARICOM, should deepen bilateral relations between the US and the region.

Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications at the White House, Ben Rhodes, said several areas of mutual interest exist between the United States and CARICOM, including regional security and energy stability.

Mr. Rhodes further noted that the US is keenly interested in youth development and plans to foster greater partnerships with the youth of the region.

Energy and security top agenda for talks between regional leaders, Obama

ENERGY and security will dominate the discussions between Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders and United States President Barack Obama during their summit here tomorrow, the senior director for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Ricardo Zuniga, said yesterday.

Speaking at a White House media briefing, Zuniga described plans for the meeting as a practical agenda to continue work already started.

Haiti lone Caribbean nation to win IDB energy innovation contest

WASHINGTON D.C., United States, Tuesday April 7, 2015, CMC – Haiti is the lone Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country named among the winners of the IDEAS V 2014 Energy Innovation Contest, an initiative by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for improving energy efficiency and expanding access to renewable energy in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The IDB said that the other winners came from Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Nicaragua and Guatemala. It said there were 282 entries from all 26 IDB member borrowing countries.
