EU funding project to develop coconut industry in the C’bean

CASTRIES, St Lucia (CMC) – The European Union is financing a project aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of small-scale coconut farmers by identifying market opportunities, creating synergies between national and regional programmes and improving access to advisory services for improved production.

The Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) in partnership with the Geneva-based International Trade Centre (ITC) and the EU are implementing the €3.5 million (One Euro=US$1.29 cents) project.

Food security programme begins in all schools

As it gets ready to re-launch its food security programme to secure investment from the private sector, the Ministry of Agriculture is doing its best to ensure primary and secondary schools are also part of the process.

The exercise, which commenced last week with the donation of fruit trees to several primary schools, aims is to establish a garden in all schools on the island.

Senior Extension Officer in the Ministry Owalabi Elabanjo said trees were delivered to the Old Road, Urlings and Greenbay Primary Schools.

Securing a Sustainable Caribbean Future – upcoming Forum

Regional and international leaders will gather in Port of Spain from 5 to 7 May 2015 to tackle intractable challenges to development and identify strategies for securing a sustainable Caribbean future.

The Forum for the Future of the Caribbean is being co-hosted by the University of the West Indies and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Trinidad and Tobago in collaboration with United Nations System and regional inter-governmental partners, and The Commonwealth.

T&T wants simpler procedures in CSME


Trinidad and Tobago yesterday called for simpler processes and procedures in order for Caribbean people to take full advantage of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) Single Market and Economy (CSME).
In an address to a two-day Newspaper Editors Regional Integration and CSME Workshop at Carlton Savannah hotel in Cascade, acting Foreign Minister Surujrattan Rambachan said the CSME, which allows for the free movement of goods, skills, labour and services across the region, is not an event.

Dominica State College students welcome CSME

Students of the Dominica State College (DSC), who recently returned from a Caricom Single Market and Economy (CSME) study tour in St. Lucia, have welcomed the regional initiative.

The group of nineteen ‘student ambassadors’ engaged both public and private sector on that island to observe and explore opportunities through regional integration.

Caribbean and Central American countries formalize partnership for catastrophe risk insurance

Washington, USA, April 18th, 2015 - The Council of Ministers of Finance of Central America, Panama and the Dominican Republic (COSEFIN) and CCRIF SPC (formerly the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility) signed today a memorandum of understanding that enables Central American countries to formally join the facility to access low cost, high quality sovereign catastrophe risk insurance.

Caribbean entrepreneurs urged to address General Assembly on climate change

UNITED NATIONS, Apr 22, CMC -The United Nations is appealing to young entrepreneurs from the Caribbean and other developing countries to address a special High-Level Event on Climate Change in June.

The UN said that a global search is underway for a young entrepreneur to address the event set for June 29 and convened by the President of the General Assembly, Sam Kutesa.
