Broadband roll-out in the Caribbean has become one of the most important Information and Communication Technology (ICT) issues in the Caribbean. This is a subject that is high on the agenda of CANTO as well as Caribbean telephone companies, governments, regulators and consumers. Broadband is seen as being critical to the economic and social development of the Caribbean region. This is however, not only important for the Caribbean region but the entire global community.

Digicel (Guyana) helps promote ICT among Guyanese girls

Digicel (Guyana) teamed up with the country's National Frequency Management Unit (NFMU) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) headquarters to promote and observe 'Girls in ICT Day', the phone company said in a statement.

'Girls in ICT' is an initiative of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and is a global effort to raise awareness on empowering and encouraging girls and young women to consider studies and careers in Information Communication Technologies  (ICTs).

St. Kitts and Nevis spearheads SIDS Action Plan at UNESCO Executive Board session

St. Kitts and Nevis and other Caribbean Member States were in a pivotal position during the 196th session of the UNESCO Executive Board held in Paris recently.  They were instrumental in securing a consensus and tabling a Draft Resolution calling for a robust UNESCO Action Plan for future activities in small island developing states (SIDS).

PANCAP Launches the Local Capacity Initiative Project

Trinidad and Tobago— During and inception meeting 28-29 April, the Pan Caribbean Partnership against HIV and AIDS (PANCAP) launched its PEPFAR- and USAID-funded Local Capacity Initiative (LCI) Project at the University of the West Indies (UWI), HEU Centre for Health Economics, Sir George Alleyne Building – Auditorium, St Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago.

Celebrating Girls in ICT - Girls Can Do It Too!

Port of Spain, 29/4/15  - Over 130 girls of the Bishop's Centenary College were introduced to the limitless possibilities for women in ICTs to commemorate International Girls in ICT Day. The initiative is backed by International Telecommunication Union (ITU) member states to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in the burgeoning field of information and communication technologies (ICTs). The theme for 2015 was: "Girls and Women and Innovation".

CARICOM Youth Ambassadors attend Youth Ministers-Youth Leaders Forum

CARICOM Youth Ambassadors (CYAs) represented at the Caribbean Region Commonwealth Youth Ministers Meeting  and Youth Leaders Forum,  in Antigua and Barbuda, April 28th -30th.

The meeting is mulling on major youth-related issues including youth employment and entrepreneurship, participation in civic and political processes, the role of young people in peace building and the professionalizing the youth work sector.

UN ranks T&T as happiest C’bean nation


Trinidad and Tobago has been named the “happiest” Caribbean nation again.

With its vibrant lifestyle, dynamic culture, booming business centre, strong government and, of course, largest Carnival celebration in the Caribbean, it is no surprise that the dual-island nation leads the way in happiness, according to the World Happiness Report from the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) released on April 23 which also stated that the country ranked highest in happiness in the Caribbean and 41st in the world.
