In a milestone development for the region, Fisheries Ministers recently endorsed a new Declaration on Spiny Lobster—a highly traded marine species in the Caribbean—at the 9th Meeting of the Ministerial Council of the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM), which concluded on Friday, 15 May 2015 in Grenada.

Canadian-funded justice project launched at UWI

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados -- Assistance to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) region in drafting legislation to further regional integration and economic growth, more legislative protection of vulnerable groups against discrimination, the training of mediators to assist parties in solving disputes without recourse to long and expensive court proceedings and a programme for sensitizing ordinary people about their rights under the law are among the benefits promised to CARICOM citizens as a new justice project takes effect.

Caribbean food production industry to receive US$469,000 in additional support

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados -- The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) has pumped an additional US$469,000 into the region’s specialty food sector via a supplemental grant to the Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export) under the Caribbean Aid for Trade and Regional Integration (CARTFund) Programme, which is funded by Britain’s Department for International Development (DfID).

Jamaica to host regional hackathon

JAMAICA will be hosting a regional "hackathon" which aims to employ the use of technology in finding solutions to real-life problems and to enhance growth in critical sectors.

A hackathon (also known as a hack day, hackfest or codefest) is an event where computer programmers and others involved in software and hardware development collaborate intensively on software projects.

Making the announcement Tuesday, Junior Technology Minister Julian Robinson said the event, to be held in two weeks, will focus on the areas of energy conservation, tourism and agriculture.

Consumption of home-grown products being encouraged by FAO

Efforts are ongoing by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to have individuals of the region to see the benefits of consuming their own products.

FAO Coordinator for the Caribbean Subregion, Dr. Deep Ford lamented the fact persons prefer to consume imported products rather than opting for those which are home grown. He noted that more has to be done to bring about a change in this mind set.
