How Caribbean youth are turning digital content into business

Role-Models are Essential

When you talk with Caribbean youth about the possibilities and hope that working online offers, you have to give them real-life examples to hang their dreams on and help them to understand that it can be done and that others are doing it. So in my previous article on digital literacy, DuttyBerry and Wally British, two youths (a male and a female) who are earning money from their digital content were highlighted. In this article I will feature a few more youths.

Three Regional Heads attend new UWI Vice-Chancellor’s installation

Three of the Region’s Heads of Government were part of a distinguished audience which witnessed the installation of Professor Sir Hillary Beckles as the eight Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Saturday 30 May, 2015.

Prime Minister of The Bahamas and Chairman of CARICOM, Rt. Hon. Perry Christie, Prime Minister of Barbados, Rt. Hon. Freundel Stuart and Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines Dr. Hon. Ralph Gonsalves attended the ceremony, at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex  in Barbados.

High-powered delegation for UNESCO Slave Route Conference

The National Commission for UNESCO has announced plans to host a Sub-Regional Slave Route Conference that will be based on the theme:  ‘Beyond Reparations: Strengthening the Slave Route Project in the Caribbean Region’.

The Conference will be held from 7 -8 July, 2015, at the St. Kitts Marriott Hotel, and will bring together experts and representatives from across the Caribbean to discuss ways and means of strengthening the Slave Route Project in the Region and fostering collaboration between and among Caribbean countries.

CARICOM Committee of Ambassadors an opportunity to impact efficiency and effectiveness – Chair

Excellencies, the formation of this Committee provides an opportunity for us to greatly impact the efficiency and effectiveness of the CARICOM Secretariat and its related agencies.  As Ambassadors, we have a unique position in having direct contact with our Heads of Government and Cabinets, as well as with the technical advisors and shareholders.  We must therefore maximize  these unique positions in auctioning our responsibilities to provide strategic advice and support to the Community Council of Ministers and support for the reform of the Community.

Five CARICOM Member States sign visa waiver agreements with EU

On 28 May, the EU signed short-stay visa waiver agreements with Saint Lucia, the Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, St Vincent and the Grenadines, the Republic of Vanuatu, the independent State of Samoa and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, at a ceremony that took place in Brussels. On behalf of the EU, the agreements were signed by Ms. Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica, Parliamentary State Secretary for EU Affairs, Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Latvia, and by Mr. Dimitris Avramopoulos, Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship.

Climate Change - Full response critical

Executive Director for the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) Ronald Jackson has rapped the region’s response to climate change.

Highlighting that it was critical to take climate change seriously, he stressed that it was also necessary to look at the phenomenon from all angles, including the islands’ level of readiness to respond to its impacts.
 

Haiti gets US$50 million for cleaner water and sanitation in cholera hot spots

WASHINGTON, United States, Thursday May 28, 2015 – About 300,000 people from Haiti’s cholera-affected rural areas and small towns will benefit from increased access to clean water and sanitation as a result of a US$50 million grant from the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank.

The Sustainable Rural and Small Towns Water and Sanitation project aims to save lives by preventing cholera and waterborne diseases in high prevalence zones, and strengthen the capacity of local agencies to deliver water and sanitation services in rural areas and small towns.

The Bahamas signs on to major Agreements

The Bahamas used the occasion of the just-ended 18th Meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) to sign Instruments of Accession to three agreements.

CARICOM Electoral Observer Mission in Suriname – update

It is the intention of the Mission to observe the activities of the poll in as many constituencies as possible and as many polling stations as time permits.  In this regard, the CEOM were present at a number of polling stations at the opening of the polls to observe the opening procedures, and will also be present  at the close of the polls to observe the closing procedures.  The voting process will be monitored during the course of the day; the Closing of the Poll will be observed; and finally, the tallying of the ballots will be observed by the CEOM.
