These comments came from Barbados’ Ambassador to CARICOM, Robert ‘Bobby’ Morris, as he delivered the feature address at a seminar for secondary school students on the topic: Barbadian Youth - An Integral Part of CARICOM’s Development. 

Regional forum to focus on policy making

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Jun. 17, CMC – Representatives from 19 Employers’ Organizations from the English- and Dutch-speaking Caribbean will participate in a regional forum entitled “Facilitating Participation of CARIFORUM Civil Society in Regional Development and Integration Processes”.

The June 22-24 meeting is part of an EU-funded Project1, implemented by the International Labour Organization (ILO) to strengthen the capacity of the Caribbean Employers’ Confederation (CEC) to play a greater role in regional policy making.

World Bank proposes new directions to boost trade in the region

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, Wednesday June 17, 2015 – A new World Bank report says there is considerable potential for boosting trade and accelerating growth in the region.

The report, ‘Trade matters: New opportunities for the Caribbean’ which was released yesterday at the Third Regional Caribbean Growth Forum, highlights that trade plays an important role in job creation.

The World Bank is driving the process to link the entire Caribbean by ferries with the results of an initial assessment being described as promising. The Bank’s Country Director for the Caribbean Sophie Sirtaine says the findings are worth further consideration so a feasibility study will be done.

She warns however that establishing a regional ferry service will initially require significant subsidies from the government.

Canada to fund six-year plantain production and marketing project

LOCAL plantain farmers will soon be receiving full support from a Canadian-funded six-year project aimed at enhancing production and facilitating linkages with local and overseas markets.The Canadian plantain support project falls under a regional programme being implemented by the Canadian Hunger Foundation (CHF) under the name Promotion of Regional Opportunities for Produce through Enterprises and Linkages (PROPEL).

CDB to host workshop on PPPs at Caribbean Growth Forum

CDB Signs Renewable Energy Agreement With EU-CIF

Efforts by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) to promote the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency among its Borrowing Member Countries have been advanced by the signing of a Contribution Agreement with the European Union-Caribbean Investment Facility (EU-CIF), in Brussels, Belgium to support the new Sustainable Energy for the Eastern Caribbean (SEEC) Programme.

Caribbean makes progress but more to be done to end AIDS Epidemic

Significant progress has been made in the Caribbean towards achieving the goals of the 2011 Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS, according to Mr. Shiraz Mohamed, First Secretary of the Guyana Permanent Mission and current Chair of the Caucus of Ambassadors to the United Nations (UN). Mr. Mohammed was speaking on behalf of the Member States of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to the UN General Assembly on 8 June, 2015, in New York.
