Education and Employment among key targets in EU-CELAC Action Plan

“Education and employment to promote social inclusion and cohesion” is one of ten key areas in the Action Plan from the just-ended 2nd summit of the European Union and the Community of  Latin American and Caribbean States (EU-CELAC) in Brussels.  Several CARICOM Heads of Government and the CARICOM Secretary-General were among Leaders and Dignitaries from the two regions  who attended the 10-11 June Summit.

Jamaica implements vector control programme as Zika virus gets closer

KINGSTON, Jamaica – With the mosquito-borne Zika Virus closer to home, Jamaica has now implemented a five-point integrated vector management control programme that includes prosecuting people who fail to comply with its provisions.

Medical Entomologist in the Ministry of Health Sherine Huntley-Jones made the announcement yesterday, just a few days after a 12-year-old girl in the Dominican Republic was the first person in the Caribbean to be diagnosed with virus, also known as ZIKV.

Guyana cops MDG award for reducing hunger

Guyana was bestowed an award for achieving the distinction of meeting the Millennium Development Goal (MDG), relating to hunger.

Agriculture Minister Mr. Noel Holder was in attendance at Rome, Italy, for three specialised meetings, as well as for issues regarding Guyana’s membership of various agriculturally related organisations. The Minister also received the prestigious award for Guyana’s success in meeting the MDG in relation to hunger.

Turks and Caicos takes strategic measures to reduce NCDs’ impact

The Hon. Dr. Rufus W. Ewing Premier  of the Turks and Caicos Islands, has committed to championing the fight against NCDs in his homeland and Regionally at the level of Heads of Government in CARICOM.

Dr Ewing, who is also his country’s Minister of Health, Agriculture and Human Services, made the commitment  during a press conference held at the conclusion Tuesday of the Forum of Key stakeholders on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) that was held in Barbados, a press release from his office said.

Strong CARICOM presence as EU-CELAC Summit opens today in Brussels

Several CARICOM Heads of Government are in Brussels for the 2nd EU-CELAC Summit, which opens today and concludes tomorrow.

The Summit, under the theme “Shaping our common futures: Working for prosperous, cohesive and sustainable societies for our citizens” brings together 61 Heads of State and Government from Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. They will discuss bi-regional and global issues, and seek to deepen political dialogue on citizen-oriented initiatives, with special focus on sustainable growth, education, security and climate change.

CRDARI wants to help CARICOM Cannabis Commission

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, Jun 8, CMC – The St. Lucia-based Caribbean Drug and Alcohol Research Institute ‎(CDARI) says it is willing to provide support to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Cannabis Commission.

In a June 8 letter to CARICOM Secretary General, Irwin La Rocque, CDARI director Dr. Marcus Day said his organization was seeking to serve the regional commission in the spirit of public private partnerships (PPP).
“CDARI has offered to the Secretary General it’s long standing research and logistical expertise,” Dr. Day wrote.
