Top ECLAC official calls for debt write-off for CARICOM states

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Friday July 3, 2015– Caribbean leaders appear to be giving serious consideration to making a proposal requesting the gradual write-off of billions of dollars in external debt.

The issue was raised by Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Alicia Bárcena at a high-level meeting this morning that preceded yesterday’s official opening of the 36th regular meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM.

CDB President Outlines Huge Possible Cost Of Inaction On Climate Change

Without appropriate and effective action, the adverse effects of climate change could cost Caribbean countries up to 75% of the gross domestic product (GDP) by 2100.  This according to Dr. Warren Smith, President of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) who spoke on Thursday, July 2, at the Caribbean High-Level Symposium on Sustainable Development at the 36th Conference of the Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Dr. Smith delivered opening remarks entitled: Resilient Economies: Caribbean Sustainability in the Global Economy.

 

UN Secretary General says MOU signed by the Government of Barbados and UN Women is a step towards improved access to justice for women victims of gender based violence

UN Women today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Office of the Attorney General of the Government of Barbados to support strengthening of the resources of the police and Courts to effectively respond to cases of violence against women.

It was on the occasion of the “Justice and Response – Ending Gender-Based Violence in Barbados” event held under the auspices of the visit of the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to Barbados.

CARICOM-UN SG engagement to lead-up to CARICOM Summit

A High-Level Strategic Dialogue between the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government and the United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon will help set the tone for the Thirty-Sixth CARICOM Summit from 2-4 July, in Bridgetown, Barbados.

The engagement in the morning of Thursday 2 July will be guided by the theme, CARICOM: Vibrant Societies, Resilient Economies, A Partnership for Implementation.

US initiative financing the largest solar energy facility in the Caribbean

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Monday June 29, 2015 – The United States is financing the construction of the first utility scale photovoltaic power plant in Jamaica.

Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) – the US Government’s development finance institution – recently signed a US$47 million financing agreement with WRB Enterprises for development of the 20 megawatt solar plant in York Town, in the southern parish of Clarendon.
