Agriculture Ministry Endorses H2K Organic Stimulants

The Ministry of Agriculture is endorsing the use of the Health 2000 (H2K) AGRO line of organic stimulants in Jamaica in an effort to boost soil health and crop productivity.

State Minister in the Ministry, Hon. Luther Buchanan said the use of the products is in keeping with strategies by the Ministry to introduce innovative sustainable farming methods to ensure the viability of the sector, thereby safeguarding the country’s food supply.

Caribbean Cannot Waste Its Democracy—Owen Arthur

Former Barbadian Prime Minister, Owen Arthur, has strongly commended  Jamaica’s  social partnership thrust, saying the Caribbean cannot afford to “waste its democracy” like some other nations which can shut down their Government from time to time, or “by making opposition to everything proposed by their leader the main political strategy.”

He was giving  the keynote  address on Thursday, July 16, at the Partnership for Jamaica retreat, chaired by Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, at the Terra Nova Hotel.

CDEMA Head wants Environmental Investments to Prevent Disasters

The International Disaster Database, Center for Research on Epidemiology of Disasters, has found a threefold increase of natural disasters from the period 1980-90 to the last decade (2000-09). The scale of these disasters has been expounded by the increased rates of urbanization, deforestation, environmental degradation and climate change. Not only have these caused extreme economic damage, but also a huge humanitarian cost.

St. Kitts steps up efforts to harness geothermal energy

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Friday July 17, 2015 – The St. Kitts and Nevis government says it has ramped up its pursuit of geothermal energy as it seeks to expand renewable energy alternatives.
Minister of Energy Ian Liburd says there are plans to conduct feasibility study in St. Kitts, to establish the potential of geothermal energy.

In Nevis, the development of geothermal has passed the exploratory drilling stage. The government said it would be prudent to establish the potential of the geothermal resource on the mainland and see how best it could be developed.

Caribbean successfully conducts Ebola simulation exercise

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago -  As part of preparation efforts to prevent and manage potential Ebola cases, the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), in collaboration with the CARICOM Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) hosted an Ebola simulation exercise, Exercise Hummingbird.

This table top exercise took place from 13 – 14 July, within 13 CARPHA Member States.  Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) predominantly acted as the national focal point for the exercise, but received support from relevant stakeholders within their countries.

Vancouver HIV-AIDS meeting seen as step towards ending pandemic by 2030

VANCOUVER — Global partners in the Diagnostics Access Initiative have joined with Roche Diagnostics to announce a 35 percent reduction in the price for HIV early infant diagnostic technologies. The new access price is US$9.40 per test, including proprietary reagents and consumables associated with diagnosing HIV in very young children.
