CDB reaffirms relationship with Guyana

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados— His Excellency Brigadier David Granger, President of Guyana and Dr. William Warren Smith, President of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) met in Georgetown on Wednesday July 29.

His Excellency, along with the Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo and Ministers of Finance, Agriculture, Business, Community; Infrastructure; Foreign Affairs engaged Dr. Smith and a team from the CDB.

The Bahamas calls for reform of UN Security Council

UNITED NATIONS, CMC – The Bahamas government has called for a reform of the Security Council of the United Nations saying it was necessary to deal with the changing global environment.

Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell said that the reform of the Council “is long overdue” and called for a change “that would see a rotating seat for the small island developing states (SIDS)”.

Mitchell said that he saw a role for the Security Council in dealing with a wide range of issues from illegal migration to crime as a part of a multifaceted and collaborative global response.

ECLAC predicts Caribbean will record its highest rate of growth since 2008

SANTIAGO, Chile, Wednesday July 29, 2015 –The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) is projecting that Caribbean economies will grow, on average, 1.7 per cent this year – its highest rate of growth since 2008.

The new projections released today during a press conference in Santiago, point to 0.5 per cent growth in the wider Latin America and Caribbean region.

CDEMA Head calls for greater investments in the natural environment to prevent disasters

Executive Director, Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), Mr. Ronald Jackson, says that although the Caribbean is one of the most hazard- prone regions of the world there are steps that can be taken to prevent the hazard impacts from becoming disasters and minimize the level of human losses. The key to achieving this, he opined is reducing the vulnerabilities of those most at risk. These include infants, persons living with disabilities, the elderly, pregnant women and persons with chronic diseases resulting in decreased mobility.

Baldwin Spencer, in the presence of Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda Sir Rodney Williams have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Constitutional Reform paving the way for the country’s accession to the Caribbean Court of Justice in its Appellate Jurisdiction.
