Measuring Gender Equity in the Caribbean Development of the CARICOM Gender Equality Indicators Model National Consultation: Grenada

St. George’s, Grenada: Over the past fifteen years, the CARICOM Secretariat has supported Member States in the strengthening of data collection and the analysis of socio-economic data from a gender equality perspective. For Governments to assess the status of women and men and to better understand the impact and shaping of policies, it is essential that this analysis and dissemination of socio-economic data is continued on a systematic basis.

Strengthening Caribbean Regional Health Security Preparedness and Response

The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) hosted a workshop titled Strengthening Caribbean Regional Health Security, Preparedness and Response from 20-22 July 2015. The three day workshop focused on contact tracing, and sought to promote and strengthen Member States’ capacity to respond to epidemic outbreaks and identify incidents that may be potential public health emergencies of international concern.

Caribbean Sex Workers Trained in Advocacy for Health Care Rights

Thirty (30) sex workers from six Caribbean countries are now equipped to better advocate for their right to appropriate health care and to help their peers to do the same.

The Guyana Sex Work Coalition in association with the Caribbean Vulnerable Communities Coalition and supported by the Global Network of Sex Work Projects joined forces to train the participants who are members of the Caribbean Sex Work Coalition.

The thirty participants came from Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Antigua and Suriname.

PAHO/WHO issues warning as study shows high rates of harmful alcohol consumption in Caribbean

WASHINGTON, United States, Wednesday July 22, 2015 – Three CARICOM nations have been identified as having the highest rates of harmful alcohol consumption in the Americas, and the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) is recommending that countries limit availability, restrict marketing and increase taxes on alcohol.

Releasing its first Regional Status Report on Alcohol and Health in the Americas this week, PAHO/WHO warned that harmful use of alcohol increased in the Americas over a five-year period.
