CARICOM Heads Opening Ceremony on Thursday

Barbados Prime Minister Freundel Stuart will assume chairmanship of the 15-Member Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on July 1, replacing outgoing Chairman, Perry Christie of the Bahamas.

As the new chairman of the Caribbean Community, Mr. Stuart will address the Opening Ceremony of the 36th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM on July 2, at the Hilton Barbados Resort, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Barbados Youth Parliament debates CARICOM

As Barbados prepares to host the Thirty-Sixth Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of theCaribbean Community (CARICOM) next week, its Youth Parliament is today discussing the topic ‘CARICOM – A Regional Integration Project’.

According tot he Barbados Government Information Service, the debate is a part of the Government’s outreach programme to sensitise the public about the importance of CARICOM and Regional integration.

The debate began at 10:00 am in the Lower House of Parliament, and will conclude  at  3:00 p.m.

CARICOM heads to continue pushing reparations agenda

When the CARICOM Heads of Government gather in Barbados early next month for the 36th Regular Meeting, they are expected to continue “fleshing out” the initiatives that have to be taken to push the reparations agenda forward.

This disclosure has come from Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, who acknowledged that progress was being made towards Reparations for Native Genocide and Slavery and that there was consensus across the region that leaders must go in that direction.

Caribbean billed as next hotbed for renewable development

FORT-DE-FRANCE, Martinique, CMC - A senior official of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) said Wednesday that the agency is convinced of the potential that renewables present for sustainable development for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) including those in the Caribbean.

 

Director of the IRENA Knowledge, Policy and Finance Centre, Henning Wuester said renewable energy is abundant, scalable and replicable and every SIDS has indigenous renewable energy resources that can be harnessed and integrated in the domestic energy mix.

PM Christie calls for realistic approach towards education

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – The three-day meeting of Commonwealth Education Ministers has opened here with Prime Minister Perry Christie calling for the 53-member grouping to “identify realistic and practical measures to ensure that every Commonwealth country is able to provide a world class education”.

 

Caribbean To Get US$200-Million Energy Facility

Noting that the Caribbean region is faced with high-energy costs and that the use of renewables could help reduce prices, a senior member of Spain's government has indicated that a green-energy facility is being created to help in the diversification of fuel sources.

"We have prepared, with the IDB [Inter-American Development Bank], a facility to finance projects of renewable energies in the Caribbean," Spain's Secretary of State for International Cooperation, Jesus Gracia Aldaz, told The Gleaner on Tuesday.

New Caribbean Basin Initiative called for focused on tourism

MIAMI, USA -- The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), representing the private sector tourism interests of the region, has called for the establishment of a Caribbean Basin Tourism Initiative (CBTI) to address the region's socio-economic challenges and create new opportunities for stimulating trade, travel and investment throughout the region. 

CARICOM states urged to give CCJ 10th anniversary gift of ‘full accession’

KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) – The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), in April, celebrated 10 years of existence as the regional court for the Caribbean.

President of the CCJ, Sir Dennis Byron, in a statement issued to mark the milestone, called on all CARICOM member states to give the CCJ the 10th anniversary gift of “full accession” to the court.

While the CCJ, in its original jurisdiction, is the court of the 15-member CARICOM, only four countries have signed on to its appellate jurisdiction. They are Barbados, Guyana, Belize, and Dominica, which joined in March.

OECS Recruits New Voices For Climate Change

Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 23, 2015 (SKNIS): The realities of climate change, its current impact on the region, and ways to effectively share the message with the public were explored last week at a two-day symposium for private media and communication personnel within government.

 

The June 18-19 symposium was attended by approximately 50 persons from the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) member countries. It was held at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort and was organized by the OECS Commission as a first time initiative. 

 

Positive Outcomes From EU/CELAC Summit

Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister, Senator the Hon. A.J. Nicholson, is reporting a number of positive developments for Jamaica and the wider region, coming out of the Second European Union/Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (EU/CELAC) Summit.

The summit was held June 10 and 11 in Brussels, Belgium. Minister Nicholson was part of the Jamaican delegation to the forum, which was led by Minister Prime, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller.
