Google promises to pay more attention to Caribbean’s needs

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Thursday June 4, 2015 —The first-ever Caribbean Peering and Internet Connection Forum (CarPIF) has concluded with commitments from Internet companies Akamai Technologies and Google to pay closer attention to the needs of Caribbean Internet service providers and consumers.

The promise came after more than 40 regional and international technology experts met in Barbados recently to discuss strategies for improving the economics and technical efficiency of Internet content delivery in the Caribbean.

Bureau of Standards Jamaica to improve packaging centre and service to private sector through EU-CSME Standby Facility

(Bridgetown, 4 June 2015) - The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) has announced the signing of a grant agreement between the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) and the CDB. The grant is valued at EUR213,820, and was approved under the Caribbean Forum of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (CARIFORUM) - European Union (EU) CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) Standby Facility for Capacity Building which is managed by the CDB.

 

India seeks greater bilateral trade relations with CARICOM

Bilateral trade relations between the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and India have much room for growth with current figures in the region of $1 billion.

This is the view expressed by India’s Vice Minister and Special Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs of India, His Excellency Mr. R. Swaminathan at the opening of the inaugural meeting of the CARICOM-India Joint Commission on Tuesday 2 June, at the CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana.

Bahamas, China Sign Memorandum on Air Services

In what could be a major step for Bahamian tourism, the Bahamas and China have signed a memorandum of understanding for air service between the two countries.

The move comes months after initial talks led by Prime Minister Perry Christie on the idea.

The agreement was signed by Transport Minister Glenys Martin at Christie’s office in Nassau.

It provides the legal framework for air services between the two countries.

Li Jiaxiang, administrator in China’s Civil Aviation Department, signed the agreement on behalf of the Chinese government.

Bringing Caricom labour closer

On May 26, the Caribbean Employers’ Confederation (CEC) and the Caribbean Congress of Labour (CCL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to work together to identify areas where common legislative and regulatory principles having regional application are essential, and formulate in legislation principles facilitating the establishment and operation of business and the free movement of labour within Caricom common space.

Health ministry puts focus on HIV awareness

The Ministry of Health, Seniors and Environment is observing HIV awareness month with additional free HIV tests.

A government spokesman said the ministry will be promoting the vision of the joint United Nations programme on HIV and Aids (UNAids) of “Getting to zero: zero new infections, zero discrimination, zero Aids-related deaths.”

“Given the preventable nature of HIV and advances in HIV and Aids care, the ministry believes this vision is possible,” the spokesman said.

CASTRIES, Jun 2 2015 (IPS) - St. Lucian farmer Anthony Herman was hoping that next year he’d manage to recoup some of the losses he sustained after 70 per cent of his cashew crop withered and died in the heat of the scorching southern Caribbean sun.

But on June 1, the beginning of the Atlantic hurricane season which coincides with the rainy season, the 63-year-old man, who has been farming for four decades, received “frightening” news about weather conditions in the region over the next year or so.
