CDB approves US$35M loan to improve education access in Belize

More children are expected to gain access to education in Belize with the construction of 35 new schools and the provision of 5,300 additional places across pre-primary, primary and secondary levels. These are among the benefits to flow from a USD35 million loan and a USD 461,000 grant approved  by the Board of Directors of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) to the Government of Belize at their meeting in Basseterre, St. Kitts.

 

CARICOM observers monitoring elections in Suriname

A Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Electoral Observer Mission is on the ground in Suriname to monitor the general elections underway today. The Mission is monitoring the electoral process, including the opening of the Poll, the voting process, the closing of the Poll and the counting of the ballots.

Farmers and Communities to Benefit from Climate Change Adaptation Project

Soil erosion management, solar power energy and an improved building code are some of the areas to be handled under a Climate Change Adaptation project estimated at more than one million Eastern Caribbean Dollars.

Caribbean Region To Benefit From Launch Of PPP Support Facility


Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 22, 2015 (SKNIS): Effective partnership between government and private sector across the Caribbean are expected to grow with the establishment of a US$1.2 million Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Support Facility.
 
This was one of the outcomes of the recently held Annual Board of Governors’ Meeting of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort.
 
CDB President, Dr. Warren Smith said the initiative is an important one and is based on three main pillars.
 

Haiti getting $27M for transportation improvements

(Caribbean Journal) Haiti is getting a $27 million grant to improve transportation infrastructure, following approval from the Inter-American Development Bank.

The grant will help modernize and improve the management of Haiti’s roads and ports, the IDB said. It is the first in a series of three policy-based grants to support various government agencies.

It will also improve road sector management and modernise Haiti’s maritime sector management with an emphasis on port reforms.

CDB’s Board of Governors Meeting ends with pledge to fight poverty more creatively

The continuing impact of poverty and high unemployment on the Region emerged as one of the key areas of concern for Governors of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) who wrapped up the 45th Annual Meeting of their Board today. This was disclosed by President of the Bank, Dr. Warren Smith, as he gave the customary report on the meeting’s deliberations during the closing ceremony.

Jamaica assumes Chair of CDB Board of Governors 2015-2016


[SKN] Jamaica assumed the chairmanship of the Caribbean Development Bank’s Board of Governors today as the 45th Annual Meeting of the Bank’s Board ended in Basseterre, St. Kitts. The CDB’s 46th Annual Meeting is set for May next year in Jamaica.  Representing Jamaica is Dr the Honourable Peter Phillips, Minister of Finance and Planning.

CDB President reiterates call for cooperation compact with international community

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – CMC – The board of governors of the Barbados-based Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) began a two-day meeting here on Wednesday reiterating a call for the establishment of a broad-based “Compact of Co-Operation” between Caribbean countries and the wider international community.

CDB President Dr. William Warren Smith told the meeting that such a cooperation, which he first articulated in Jamaica and St. Lucia, is intended to deal with the issue of sovereign indebtedness in the region.

Sol Petroleum makes significant investments in Jamaica’s youth

Sol Petroleum, the newest entrant to Jamaica’s petroleum energy industry has made a huge investment in the country’s youth.

The investment comes in the form of the company’s Sol Scholarship programme, which awards students with academic scholarships to attend any of the University of the West Indies’ four campuses (Cave Hill, Mona, St. Augustine and Open Campus).

Through the Sol Scholarship programme eight Jamaican students have been awarded scholarships valued at over $10 million.

Barbados Internet Exchange established

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Thursday May 21, 2015 – Three local Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish the Barbados Internet Exchange (BARIX).

Representatives of Cable and Wireless (Barbados) Limited, Digicel (Barbados) Limited and Columbus Barbados were all signatories to the document.
