Cuba agrees to extension on trade agreement with CARICOM

HAVANA, Cuba (CMC) — Cuba is providing the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries with an extension of the agreement on trade and economic cooperation which facilitates access to the Cuban market for hundreds of CARICOM products, according to an official statement issued on Monday.

It said that the issue was discussed at the fifth CARICOM-Cuba Ministerial meeting that was held last Saturday.

According to the statement, the agreement also provides for trade between the parties.

“Indigenous solutions needed for disaster risk management” – CDEMA head

MONTREAL, Mar. 9, CMC – Head of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) says the region needs to marry its indigenous solutions to disaster risk management with modern technology.

Ronald Jackson was a panelist in a forum discussing the linkages between disaster risk reduction, climate change and sustainable development, at the 5th Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas about to wrap up here.

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley on Monday delivered the feature address at the Regional Standardization Forum for Bridging the Standardization Gap (BSG) at the Office of the Parliament, International Waterfront Centre, Port of Spain. 

The forum, hosted by the Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (TATT), the first to be held in Latin America and the Caribbean, facilitated the discussion of various standardization topics under discussion at ITU-T and highlighted activities related to Bridging the Standardization Gap (BSG) Programme

New trial to target preventable deaths in the Caribbean

A study just launched will investigate ways to reduce non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes and high blood pressure, which cause more than 60 per cent of deaths in the Caribbean. Researchers from King’s College London, the University of Guyana (UG), Ross University Dominica and the University of the West Indies hope a new approach - training members of religious congregations who are embedded in local communities - will increase the reach of health services and reduce deaths.

 

CARICOM Competition Commission hosts sensitisation workshop on competition law for MPs

The Caribbean Community Secretariat (CARICOM) Competition Commission is working towards implementing and strengthening competition laws and policies in all of its member states.

Members of Parliament (MPs) today, participated in a sensitisation exercise which will pave the way for the establishment of the competition culture locally.

The sensitisation workshop was facilitated through the Caribbean Forum of African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) states (CARIFORUM) and CARICOM.

Caribbean female voices say there are greater roles for first ladies

 

Several women of prominence are calling for the Caribbean’s first ladies and the spouses of heads of government to be allowed more prominent roles in the development of their countries and the advancement of various causes.

The call comes on the heels of the establishment of a Caribbean First Ladies/Spouses Network (CARIFLAN) to champion the ‘Every Caribbean Woman Every Caribbean Child’ (ECWECC) initiative.
