FEATURE: UN Ocean Conference ‘dream come true’ for Caribbean nations such as Trinidad and Tobago

2 June 2017 – Protecting the oceans is among the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the blueprint for a more just and equitable world adopted by the 193 Member States of the United Nations in September 2015.

SDG 14 on conserving and sustainably using marine resources is the springboard for the Ocean Conference, taking place at UN Headquarters in New York from 5 to 9 June.

The meeting is especially relevant to Caribbean countries, according to Juan Miguel Diez, Director of the UN Information Centre (UNIC) for the region.

Disciplined Forces trained for the CARICOM Disaster Relief Unit in Barbados

Bridgetown, Barbados May 30, 2017 – 31 participants from the disciplined forces, including police, military and fire services are taking part in the annual CARICOM Disaster Relief Unit (CDRU) training, which is being held at the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) Coordinating Unit and the Headquarters of the Regional Security System (RSS) in Barbados from May 29 – June 2, 2017.

The CDRU is a specialised humanitarian response team equipped to provide assistance to any of the eighteen CDEMA Participating States, affected by natural or technological hazard.

Opposition Free National Movement Wins Bahamas 2017 General Elections

NASSAU, Bahamas, May 10 2017, (Caribbean News Service) — Dr. Hubert Minnis led the main opposition party to victory on Wednesday, ousting the ruling party in General Elections.

Prime Minister Perry Christie, who was seeking a second consecutive term, conceded defeat after exit polls projected a major win for the opposition Free National Movement (FNM).

Caribbean Safe School Ministerial Forum opens in Antigua

High level delegates from at least 12 Caribbean countries are in Antigua & Barbuda to discuss measures that can be implemented to improve the safety and security of education facilities within the region.

The participants are ministers of education and other representatives who yesterday commenced their first session of the inaugural Caribean Safe School Ministerial Forum at the Halcyon Cove by Rex Resorts.

The meeting is being hosted by the Ministry of Education Science and Technology.

Sargassum project presents at the Smithsonian

A Saint Lucian project on the transformation of sargassum seaweed into organic compost will be showcased during the Earth Optimism Summit at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.

The project, the brainchild of Johannan Dujon, owner/manager of Algas Organics, will be highlighted at a gathering of 1000 conservation practitioners, pioneering scientists from varied fields, leaders in industry, philanthropists and artists. Presentations at the event will be streamed live to a global audience.
