CARICOM heads to be briefed on CSME review

The CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), crime and security and correspondent banking are among the issues to be discussed at CARICOM’s 28th Intercessional Heads of Government meeting.

The two-day meeting will be hosted in Guyana at the CARICOM Secretariat, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara on February 16 and 17.

The world is likely to face a food crisis by 2050 unless agricultural production increases. The Food and Agricultural Organization estimates that there will be an additional two billion mouths to feed in the world within the next thirty-five years. The growth of the world’s population along with increased urbanization is expected to increase the demand for agricultural produce by some 70 per cent by 2050.

The Regional Response to Childhood Obesity Intensifies

Childhood obesity continues to be a serious public health concern in the Region.  Statistics show that more than 30% of our Caribbean adolescents are overweight or obese, and risk developing non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as hypertension, diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular diseases later in life.  The economic burden of diabetes and hypertension alone is estimated at between 1.4% and 8% of GDP in the Caribbean, thus creating a significant drain on Caribbean economies, and threatening development prospects.

 

CARICOM - Regional conference to tackle childhood obesity


BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Feb 9, CMC – Representatives of regional health organisations are meeting here this week to map out a plan to prevent childhood obesity through improved food and nutrition security.

The two-day high-level meeting is being hosted by the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) in response to growing concerns among the region’s health officials that 20-30 percent of the Caribbean’s children are overweight or obese.

Officials embrace creation of Labour Management Information System

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 07, 2017 (SKNIS): Labour stakeholders in St. Kitts and Nevis are pleased with the information sharing and knowledge development taking place at a four-day workshop at the Ocean Terrace Inn.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Tuesday February 7, 2017 – Haiti officially has a new elected president.

Jovenel Moise was installed this morning as the French speaking nation’s 58th president in a brief ceremony that was attended by former President Michel Martelly, as well as Caribbean and international dignitaries.

The 48-year-old entrepreneur and political novice took the oath of office at the Haitian Parliament, a year after Martelly left office without a successor and Jocelerme Privert filled the post in the interim.

Guyana to present arrest warrant treaty at CARICOM intersessional meeting

Guyana will be hosting the 28th  Inter-sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM on February 16 and 17. The host country will present the draft CARICOM Arrest Warrant Treaty for ratification at the meeting.

At today’s post Cabinet press briefing, Minister of State, Joseph Harmon said, “The adoption of this Treaty will simplify the procedures by which fugitives from justice are returned to participating member states to face criminal prosecution or serve judicial sentences.”
