Marijuana legalization must include justice reform

Across our country, we routinely take a pledge that ends in “with liberty and justice for all.” 

Yet that fundamental promise has been broken in six of the eight states that have legalized recreational marijuana use, as tens of thousands of people remain in state prison for nonviolent marijuana crimes.

St. Kitts And Nevis Ranks Number One in CARICOM in The 2016 Doing Business Report

Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 25, 2017 (SKNIS): St. Kitts and Nevis has ranked number one in the CARICOM in the “2016 Doing Business Report”, says Kennedy DeSilva, Deputy Comptroller of Customs in the Office of the Comptroller, appearing on today’s radio-television show “Working for You.”

 

He said that the Customs and Excise Department has worked hard to become a high ranking country and explained that to achieve this the World Bank looks at all the countries around the world and sets up a basic scenario.

 

CXC e-testing begins

The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) reported success as it officially launched its Electronic Testing Service to the region yesterday.

Some 500 candidates from seven countries – Jamaica, Grenada, Dominica, Cayman Islands, Anguilla, St Lucia and Montserrat and St Lucia – tested the online initiative which allowed students to use a computer or an electronic device to sit their Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Paper 1 (Multiple Choice) examination in more than 12 subjects.

We must do more – PM Christie on reducing cost of energy

Prime Minister of The Bahamas, the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie wants the Caribbean Region to do much more in its quest reduce the cost of energy.

In a wide-ranging address at the opening ceremony of the Fifth Caribbean Sustainable Energy Forum (CSEF) on Monday evening in The Bahamas, the Prime Minister said that the cost of doing business in the Region was too high as a result of the high price of energy. He said that the Region had to have a sense of urgency to confront its challenges.

Agriculture, climate change, renewable energy to benefit as IDB carves out $13B for lending

NASSAU, The Bahamas, Jan 23 2017 – The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) said it will be lending US$13 billion over the coming year and a significant portion of that amount has been earmarked for agriculture, climate change and renewable energy projects.

Speaking here Monday night at the opening of the fifth Caribbean Sustainable Energy Forum (CSEF), Executive Director of the IDB Jerry Butler noted that the issue of energy and the issue of renewable energy have been of constant focus for the institution.

Full, frank discussion needed on CSME – PM Stuart

Prime Minister Freundel Stuart believes the time has come to have “full and frank discussions” on the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).

Mr. Stuart, who is the Lead CARICOM Head with Responsibility for CSME, expressed this view recently during a meeting with several CARICOM officials, led by Secretary-General, Irwin LaRocque, at Ilaro Court.

Jamaica to host UN tourism conference

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is celebrating sustainable tourism this year, and Jamaica is to host the major event on the programme – the International Conference on Sustainable Tourism.
