Dominica going for medical marijuana

ROSEAU, Dominica (CMC) — Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says his Administration will discuss the issue of medical marijuana in the coming year.

Skerrit, who was a guest on a local radio programme on Wednesday, said the topic must be discussed in a focused and informed manner, in order to take full advantage of the use of the herb, which many have sworn has saved their lives.

Impressive but challenging year for regional tourism

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Secretary General of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO), Hugh Riley, says 2016 has been an impressive but also challenging year for tourism in the region.

In his Christmas message, Riley pointed to an increase in tourist arrivals when compared to 2015 that was a record year.

He said the tourist arrivals have been fuelled by strong performances in Europe — mainly the United Kingdom and Germany —and from the United States.

Turks and Caicos elects first female premier

PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos  (CMC) — Voters in Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) on Thursday elected its first ever woman to head a government in this British Overseas Territory (BOT) and in the process booted Premier Dr Rufus Ewing out of Parliament completely.

The preliminary results released Friday by the electoral officials here showed that 45-year-old attorney, Sharlene Cartwright Robinson, had led her opposition People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) to victory, winning seven of the 10 constituencies. The party also won four of the five at large candidates

EU to boost CARIBBEAN competitiveness by strengthening regional partnerships

BASSE-TERRE, Guadeloupe -- The INTERREG V Caribbean, a multimillion dollar EU-funded program to strengthen regional partnerships, will be officially launched in Saint Lucia on Wednesday.

In addition to boosting the economic competitiveness of the region's countries, the INTERREG V Caribbean program will also respond to environmental challenges and health issues, while promoting the joint cultural heritage of the region. The program focuses on priority areas such employment and innovation, natural hazards, the cultural environment, public health and renewable energy.

President Granger emphasises importance of CSME, regional integration

President David Granger said that there is an economic purpose to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and emphasised the importance of the deepening of regional integration and the advancement of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) for the economic well-being of all Member States. He made the remarks during an informal meeting on Thursday, with the staff at Guyana’s diplomatic mission in Barbados, as he encouraged them to understand their role in maintaining strong relations with their host country.

OECS Supports CARICOM Energy Month

In the CARICOM region, November is earmarked as Energy Month to increase awareness on energy consumption and to encourage energy-saving actions. Similar to recent years, the OECS Sustainable Energy Unit contributed actively to the month-long observance.

Today, Guyana joined other countries in observing World AIDS Days with the message of prevention being echoed as CARICOM’s Deputy Secretary-General remains optimistic about the future effect the virus has on the world’s population.

The world has made huge progress in the fight against AIDS, according to the United Nations. But for some experts that fight to eradicate the disease is far from over.

CDB co-hosts Roundtable Discussion on Gender Equality with CARICOM, UN Women

On October 31, the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) co-hosted a roundtable discussion in Barbados, “Partnerships for Gender Equality”, with UN Women and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The event was part of the agenda for UN Women Executive Director, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka’s first visit to the Caribbean. The Roundtable took place at the United Nations House.
