PM Outlines Action Plan For Aid To Haiti And Bahamas

The Honourable Prime Minister and Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit, on Friday, outlined a plan of action to be taken by member states in aid of Haiti and the Bahamas.

The Honourable Prime Minister held a press conference on Friday, October 14th, to report on his visit to the two islands following Hurricane Matthew.

At the press conference the CARICOM Chairman revealed that in Haiti two towns in the west were severely affected; Les Cayes and Jeremie.

He also spoke of deaths associated with an outbreak of cholera in Haiti.

CDB Approves USD24.1 mn Education Project in Saint Lucia

The Board of Directors of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) has approved USD23.4 million (mn) in financing for a project, which aims to strengthen Saint Lucia’s education system to better address the needs of diverse learners.

Guyana to benefit from US $18,000 PANCAP project

Member states of the Pan Caribbean Partnership Against HIV/AIDS (PANCAP) like Guyana, stand to benefit from a US $18,000 health project aimed at pushing early antiretroviral therapy for persons living with HIV.

 

The 18-month PEPFAR (President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief)-USAID funded initiative is being implemented by the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs under the Knowledge for Health (K4Health) project.

 

Seeking growth in Services: Stakeholders open symposium Monday

A wide cross section of stakeholders in the Region’s services sector began a three day symposium in Antigua and Barbuda Monday, aimed at developing strategies and action plans to boost investment, output, employment and trade in the sector.

The event will focus on increasing business in several priority areas including:

Financial Services
Health and Wellness Services
Cultural, Entertainment and Sporting Services
Tourism Services, and

Delayed Haiti elections to go ahead November 20

Port-au-Prince (AFP) - Haiti, whose long-overdue presidential elections were further delayed when Hurricane Matthew ravaged the island nation killing hundreds and causing massive destruction, will finally vote on November 20, officials said Friday.

Haitians had been due to head to the polls last week, but the elections, in which voters will cast ballots for both presidential and legislative candidates, were postponed due to the havoc.

Dominica donates US$100,000 to hurricane-ravaged Haiti, The Bahamas

ROSEAU, Dominica, Dominica News Online – Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, has said the government of Dominica has donated US$100,000 to The Bahamas following the passage of Hurricane Matthew.

US$100,000 was also donated to Haiti, the hardest hit by Matthew, to meet that country’s immediate needs.

Skerrit, who is a heading a CARICOM delegation to the affected countries as Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Governments, arrived in The Bahamas on Wednesday after visiting Haiti.

“Serious situation” in Haiti after Hurricane Matthew

NASSAU, Bahamas, Oct 13, CMC — The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) says “a serious situation” is developing in in Haiti after it was ravaged by Hurricane Matthew last week.

“There are still five or so communities, maybe a little more, where we have not been able to establish communication. From the aerial assessment conducted, most of the buildings in that area were significantly destroyed.
