Haiti funding hurricane relief, aid must prioritize growth: president

PORT-AU-PRINCE, (Reuters) – Haitian interim President Jocelerme Privert on Tuesday played down the international aid response to Hurricane Matthew, saying some promised foreign aid had yet to materialise and that the devastated country was mostly funding its own recovery.

Southwestern Haiti was smashed by the Category 4 hurricane on Oct. 4, which barreled through the southern coast of the poor island nation, killing some 1,000 people and displacing hundreds of thousands.

PAHO says caribbean achieved nearly all health targets of un millennium development goals

WASHINGTON, Oct 11, CMC – The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) says Caribbean countries have met almost all the health targets of the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

“As the result of 15 years of efforts, the countries of the hemisphere significantly improved the health of their populations,” said Kira Fortune, acting chief of PAHO’s Special Programme on Sustainable Development and Health Equity.

Manufactures pleased with suspension of cet on several items

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Oct 10, CMC – The Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA) Monday said it has been successful in its application for the suspension of import duties on raw materials under the Common External Tarriff (CET).

In a statement, GMSA that it had received support in its application to the Guyana-based Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat for the suspension from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Haiti started burying some of its dead in mass graves in the wake of Hurricane Matthew, a government official said on Sunday, as cholera spread in the devastated southwest and the death toll from the storm rose to 1,000 people.

CDEMA offers operational support to Civil Protection Directorate in Haiti post Hurricane Matthew

Six (6) experts from the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) drawn from the CDEMA Coordinating Unit and the Participating States of Saint Lucia and Jamaica are now stationed in Haiti to provide operational support to the Civil Protection Directorate (CPD) in response to the widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew. The experts are members of the CARICOM Operational Support Team (COST) and will provide support to coordination efforts in Jérémie and Les Cayes, two settlements most affected by Matthew.
