UWI launches Faculty of Sport

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles made the statement at the official launch of The University's Faculty of Sport on Wednesday at The UWI Regional Headquarters in Jamaica.

Vice-Chancellor Beckles referenced a report which assessed the global sport industry to be valued at an estimated US$145 billion and growing at a rate of 4.5 per cent per year.

Tax Administrators Assemble in St. Kitts And Nevis for the 24th General Assembly And Technical Conference Of COTA

Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 25, 2017 (SKNIS):  A number of tax administrators from across the CARICOM region are currently in St. Kitts and Nevis attending the 24th General Assembly and Technical Conference of the Caribbean Organization of Tax Administrators (COTA), with the aims of encouraging deliberations on topical issues relating to the efficient mobilization of tax revenues to support growth process in member states, as well as the sharing of experiences among tax administrators in the region.

 

Regional Climate Centre established in Barbados

Barbados is now home to the first Regional Climate Centre (RCC) in the western hemisphere.

The centre, which is housed at the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) in Husbands, St James, was financed to the tune of US$5 million by the United States Agency for International Development.

United States Ambassador to Barbados and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States Linda Taglialatela noted the importance of having such a centre in the region.

Bahamas PM to chair new tourism committee

Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders have agreed to establish a committee that will look at ways at incorporating both the public and private sector in the overall development of the regional tourism industry, Bahamas Prime Minister, Dr. Hubert Minnis, has said.

Minnis, who is attending his first CARICOM summit after leading his Free National Movement to victory in that Caribbean country, said the idea also is to “have funding available for a sustained marketing and increasing our product.

UN HIV/AIDS envoy finishes role in the Caribbean region

The United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on HIV/AIDS has completed his tenure in the Caribbean region.

Guyana-born Edward Greene was appointed to the post on 1 January 2012, and is now looking ahead to future opportunities.

“I wish to take this opportunity to thank you for your activism in our collective quest to end AIDS by 2030, and in particular for the courtesies and cooperation you have extended to me,” Dr Greene wrote in a personal note to friends and colleagues.
