Hurricane Maria pummels Caribbean island of Dominica as Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico brace for impact

Hurricane Maria slammed into the Caribbean island of Dominica as a Category 5 storm with "merciless" 160 mph winds Monday night, and the storm, deemed "potentially catastrophic" by the National Hurricane Center, is now headed for the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Maria is expected to move over the northeastern Caribbean Sea today and is forecast to "remain an extremely dangerous category 4 or 5 hurricane" as it approaches the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico tonight and Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center said.

CARPHA Deploys Staff to Assist Hurricane-Devastated British Virgin Islands

On Sunday, September 10, 2017, the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), as part of the Regional Response Mechanism (RRM) which is spearheaded by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency Coordinating Unit (CDEMA-CU), deployed a member of staff to assist the British Virgin Islands (BVI) in the post-Hurricane Irma Response. 
 

Devastated Barbuda - CARICOM Delegation continue asssessment

Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Mr. Gaston Browne joined CARICOM Chairman, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell of Grenada, and Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque on a tour of the hurricane ravaged island of Barbuda, Wednesday.

Hurricane Irma destroyed or damaged more than 90 percent of Barbuda’s houses and the entire population has since been transferred to Antigua.

Regional Network launched to collaborate on Zika, other vector borne diseases

Recent outbreaks of Zika (2016), and Chikungunya (2014) and the continued circulation of Dengue, highlight the need for an integrated approach to the prevention and control of these vector borne diseases (VBDs), especially since many countries depend on tourism as a major source of revenue.

PM: CARIFESTA XIII was a phenomenal success

Prime Minister Freundel Stuart has described CARIFESTA XIII, held in Barbados from August 17 – 27, as being “a phenomenal success”.

Mr. Stuart noted that in any undertaking, whether small or large, challenges often appeared at the last minute to thwart even the best laid plans. He noted that in Barbados, nature intervened to test to the limits the logistical skills of organisers.

CARIFESTA XIII concludes; Trinidad and Tobago next host

The curtains came down on the thirteenth edition of the Caribbean Festival of Arts CARIFESTA XIII last evening. The ten-day mega cultural event ended with a closing ceremony at Kensington Oval Ground, President Kennedy Drive, Bridgetown, Barbados.

The night’s activities included a culmination of performances from various Caribbean countries that have performed throughout the festival and the passing of the baton to next host country of CARIFESTA XIIII, Trinidad and Tobago.
