New judge for CCJ

(Caribbean Court of Justice) The eleven-member Regional Judicial and Legal Services Commission has identified the Honourable Madame Justice Maureen Rajnauth-Lee to be appointed Judge of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).

Mme. Justice Rajnauth-Lee was selected from among applicants from the Caribbean, North America and Eastern Europe. Judges appointed to the CCJ are evaluated on the basis of wide-ranging criteria that include experience, high moral character, intellectual and analytical ability, sound judgment, integrity and an understanding of people and society.

Cuba and EU agree to new talks following historic breakthrough with US

BRUSSELS, Belgium, Friday January 16, 2015, CMC – The European Union (EU) says it has agreed with Cuba to meet in early March for a third round of negotiations aimed at normalizing ties.

The agreement comes less than a month after a historic breakthrough between Havana and Washington.

The EU and Cuba, which began normalization talks last year after ties were suspended in 2003, had initially planned to hold a third round in December before they were called off twice.

PM to represent Jamaica at US Energy summit

NEW YORK, NY, Friday January 16, 2015 - Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller is expected to represent Jamaica at the first ever Caribbean Energy Security Summit to be hosted by United States Vice President Joe Biden in Washington, DC on January 26, 2015.

The Vice President will be welcoming Caribbean leaders and representatives of the international community to promote a cleaner and more sustainable energy future in the Caribbean through improved energy governance, greater access to finance, and donor coordination.

Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic Sign 11 Cooperation Agreements

Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic have signed a total of 11 bilateral agreements during a visit by Dominican President Danilo Medina to the American territory this week.

The cooperation agreements cover areas including trade, education, agriculture, tourism, the environment, security and job creation, among other areas.

Medina said the two sides also identified potential linkages between industry in both areas, along with several agreements that could reduce tuition for higher education.

2015 presents historic opportunity to improve people’s lives – UN Assembly President

14 January 2015 – The next several months will present a historic opportunity to agree on an “inspiring” agenda that will directly improve the lives of people around the world, United Nations General Assembly President Sam Kutesa said today as he outlined his objectives for 2015.

“As we embark on the critical task of formulating an inclusive and transformative post-2015 development agenda, I call on Member States to approach the negotiations with a positive and constructive spirit,” Mr. Kutesa told the 193-Member Assembly this afternoon.

OAS approves declaration for timely holding of elections in Haiti

The Organisation of American States (OAS) on Wednesday approved a Declaration for the swift holding of elections in Haiti, days after last ditch negotiations for a new electoral law collapsed and prompted the dissolution of Parliament.

President Michel Martelly is now ruling by decree.

Approval of the Caribbean Community (Caricom)-sponsored Declaration by the Permanent Council followed an update on the political situation in the French Creole-speaking nation by the Foreign Minister of Haiti, Duly Brutus.

Big Pink Garbage Truck Saving Lives in The Bahamas

Melanie Griffin, Minister of Social Services and Community Development said, “You cannot fight breast cancer – or any other form of cancer – with ribbons alone, you fight it with a team.”
