St Vincent embarks on renewable energy path

KINGSTOWN, St Vincent, Monday January 12, 2015, IPS – For decades, the fertile slopes of La Soufriere volcano, which occupies the northern third of this 344-kilometre-square island, has produced illegally grown marijuana that fuels the local underground economy, and the trade in that illicit drug across the eastern Caribbean.

But now the 1,234-metre-high mountain, which last erupted in 1979, is now being explored for something very different — its geothermal energy potential.

Vincentians in mourning as bus with school children plunges into the sea

St. Vincent and the Grenadines was thrown into a state of mourning Monday after a mini bus with about  16 school children and three other persons overturned between Fancy and Owia, on the island’s north east coast  and plunged into the sea below.  Official reports put the death toll at five.

Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves addressed the nation Monday morning  describing the tragedy as “an extremely sad moment”. He later visited the scene.

Region warned to be prepared for massive earthquake

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Jan 13, CMC – The Seismic Research Centre (SRC) of the University of the West Indies (UWI) is warning the region to “move expeditiously” towards building resilience amid predictions of the Caribbean being hit with an earthquake with a magnitude of eight or larger.

US Vice President Joe Biden to Host Caribbean Energy Security Summit

United States Vice President Joe Biden will be hosting the first-ever Caribbean Energy Security Summit later this month.

The summit will be held in Washington, DC on Jan. 26.

“The Vice President looks forward to welcoming Caribbean leaders and representatives of the international community to promote a cleaner and more sustainable energy future in the Caribbean through improved energy governance, greater access to finance, and donor coordination,” the White House said in a statement.

Suriname Assumes Chair of the OAS Permanent Council

The Permanent Representative of Suriname to the Organization of American States (OAS), Niermala Badrising, today assumed the Chair of the Permanent Council of the hemispheric institution, a position she will hold for the next three months.

Gayle leads Windies to world record triumph

Johannesburg (AFP) - Chris Gayle blasted 90 off 41 balls as the West Indies achieved a world record run chase in the second Twenty20 international on Sunday to beat South Africa by four wickets.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis hit a 46-ball century in his team's total of 231 for seven -- their second highest total in the shortest form of the game.

But it was overhauled with four balls to spare on a record-breaking day at the Wanderers with West Indies captain Darren Sammy finishing the match with a six to take his team to 236 for six.

Five years after quake, cholera epidemic haunts Haiti

Five years after an earthquake demolished its capital, Haiti's efforts to get back on its feet are still hampered by an epidemic blamed on the UN troops there to help.

The United Nations has denied legal responsibility for the ongoing cholera outbreak that has killed 8,000 Haitians, but all scientific evidence points to poor sanitation at a peacekeeping base.

Victims of the disease are attempting to sue for damages in a US court, but the United Nations and its donor states are hiding behind the legal immunity conferred on it by its founding treaties.
