PM Browne appoints Financial Guru Martin Franklin as Special Economic Envoy


ST. JOHN’S, Antigua and Barbuda – 31 December, 2014……….International financial guru, Martin Ellis Franklin, has been appointed as a Special Economic Envoy of Antigua and Barbuda by Prime Minister the Hon. Gaston Browne.
 
Martin Franklin, who is the son of Sir Roland Franklin of Jumby Bay, has been visiting Antigua and Barbuda for over thirty-years and is widely known across north America in the investment and executive management fields.

Trinidad Receives $40 Million CDB Loan for Energy Policy Changes

Trinidad and Tobago has received a $40 million policy-based loan from the Caribbean Development Bank to help reinforce “policy changes” in the energy sector, the bank announced.

The policy relates to a sustainable energy programme on which Trinidad embarked in 2011.

Barbados & Cuba Discuss Sports & Culture

Barbados and Cuba are seeking to deepen their collaboration in sports and culture. 

The proposed approach was discussed during a courtesy call on Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley, by Cuban Ambassador, Francisco Fernández Peña, at the Ministry of Culture’s Haggatt Hall, St. Michael, office, today.

The Sports Minister noted that the National Sports Council was interested in extending its existing contract with CUBADEPORTES but would be seeking to widen cooperation to ensure greater reciprocity. 

Health officials investigating two suspected Chikungunya deaths

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, Monday December 29, 2014, CMC - Health officials are investigating the deaths of two people to determine whether they were as a consequence of the mosquito-borne illness Chikungunya, which causes fever and severe joint pain, muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue and rash.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment, Luis de Shong, said the two suspected deaths have not been confirmed by laboratory tests.

Mighty Sparrow – Person of the Year for NY Magazine

IMF extends interest waiver for low income countries

WASHINGTON, DC, USA  — Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries are to benefit from an extension of interest waiver for low-income countries from the Washington based International Monetary Fund until the end of 2016.

The IMF had initially endorsed temporary relief of interest payments on all outstanding concessional loans for Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust (PRGT) eligible members in 2009, waiving all interest payments on PRGT loans through December 2011.

New York pays tribute to the “Calypso Queen of the World”

NEW YORK, United States, Sunday December 28, 2014, CMC – Though she was barely able to walk because of gout, Calypso Rose was still able to woo her audience, as Brooklyn paid tribute to the Tobago-born singer who “broke the glass ceiling” in the calypso genre.

“This woman, sometimes I sit and wonder what got that woman to sing calypso in the 1950s and survive,” said popular Grenadian-born radio personality Harold Pysadee, one of the Master of Ceremonies at the grand tribute in honour of Calypso Rose, 74, renowned as the “Calypso Queen of the World”.
