Caribbean reports dramatic decline in babies born with HIV

WASHINGTON, Dec 16, CMC - A new joint report by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) says the number of babies born with HIV in Latin America and the Caribbean declined by 78 per cent between 2001 and 2013.

The report, “Elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV and Congenital Syphilis in the Americas,” takes stock of progress in the region's countries toward the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis, said PAHO.

CARICOM partners with WICB to boost schools


Schools throughout the Caribbean Community are being given an opportunity to vie for cricket nets as part of a new initiative announced by the Georgetown based Caricom Secretariat yesterday called the “Pitch in Schools Project”.
The project will provide primary and secondary schools with an opportunity to vie for the construction of cricket net facilities or an upgrade to such facilities where they already exist.
The project emanated from a plan developed by Deputy Programme Manager for Sports at the Caricom Secretariat, John Campbell.

OAS supporting Suriname in development of National Cyber Security Plan

The Organization of American States (OAS) today concluded a two-day mission in Suriname for preparatory meetings geared towards information gathering to assist in the development of a National Cyber Security Plan. This mission consisted of an initial assessment of the current cyber security situation in the country, through the convening of stakeholders from a number of sectors, such as government, civil society, academia, and critical infrastructure operators. Facilitated by OAS experts, discussion groups were organized to identify cyber security gaps and needs.

Sporting facilities earmarked for facelift

Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 12, 2014 (SKNIS): A number of sporting facilities in St. Kitts are earmarked for a facelift in 2015.

Minister of Sports, the Honourable Glenn Phillip stated that more than $5.5 million has been allocated to the Department of Sports with $3.9 million to cover capital expenditure on the upgrade and redevelopment of sporting facilities.

New Facilities In The New Year For CXC

Spanking new facilities at Pine Plantation, St. Michael, and a new Registrar for the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), were among the key talking points when the Council recently held its Appreciation and Awards Luncheon, at The Crane Hotel in St Philip.

In his address, Education Minister, Ronald Jones, told employees they should be in the new facilities by the end of January next year.

Haiti - Health : $2M partnership, USAID - Zanmi Lasante

Sunday, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Rajiv Shah visited the Mirebalais Hospital and announced USAID is finalizing a $2 million partnership with the Partners in Health (PIH) local affiliate, Zanmi Lasante.

PM Douglas says ALBA can improve important sectors of the region

Douglas has described the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) as an example of cooperation to improve health care, education, culture and finance, and to show that there is an alternative way for human development.

Speaking at the 13th Summit in Havana, the Cuban capital, Prime Minister Douglas pointed out that St. Kitts and Nevis recognizes ALBA as an institution to expand cooperation and integration among southern nations.

SAC welcomes appointment of new ACP Secretary-General

The Sugar Association of the Caribbean (SAC) has welcomed the appointment of Ambassador Patrick Gomes, as the new Secretary-General of the African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) States.

The SAC, at a meeting of its Board on 12-13 December, 2014,  in Georgetown, Guyana, pointed out that Ambassador Gomes had been in the forefront of promoting the interest of the ACP sugar industries in the European Union (EU) as Chairman of the ACP Sub- Committee on Sugar.

Task Force report presented to WICB

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – The Board of Directors of the West Indies Cricket Board met in Port of Spain, Trinidad yesterday, December 13, 2014. The Board deliberated on a number of matters including cricketing, governance, developmental, commercial and scheduling.

Notably the Board received the Task Force and was briefed on the vision for selection by Selection Panel member Courtney Browne who represented Chairman of Selectors Clive Lloyd who is on tour with the West Indies Test squad in South Africa.
