Trinidadians get assurance on State of Economy - PM Persad- Bissessar’s address on the state of the economy

January 9, 2015: The following is a statement made my Prime Minister, the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar on the evening of January 8, 2015 on matters of the state of the economy:

My fellow citizens, ladies and gentlemen, good evening. 

When we last spoke on the eve of the New Year, 2015, I made a commitment to have this conversation with you.

My commitment came about because of growing turbulence in the global energy sector, and the impact of lower oil prices on economies such as ours.

SKN breaks ground on new solar farm

Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 08, 2015 (SKNIS): St Kitts continues to break new ground in its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint, reduce fossil fuel consumption and expand its usage of renewable energy, with the opening of the first half of a one-megawatt solar farm today (January 08).

Going Green with energy saving street lights

Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 08, 2015 (SKNIS): The first phase of an initiative to replace all of 5000 street lights in the federation with energy-saving LED bulbs began yesterday (January 07) in Basseterre.

Minister of Energy and Public Utilities, Hon. Earl Asim Martin, officially handed over the first 1000 bulbs to the St. Kitts Electricity Company Ltd (SKELEC) CEO, Mr Cartwright Farrell and said that this initiative dovetails a broader push to increase the federation’s use of renewable energy and reduce its reliance on harmful and expensive fossil fuels.

Speaking to The Middle East Economic Survey, a specialist oil industry publication, the Minister said that the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) will not cut oil production, even if the price falls to US$20 per barrel.

Pilot shortage hits Caribbean Airlines

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Thursday January 8, 2015 – Caribbean Airlines is said to be experiencing a shortage of pilots at its Piarco and Norman Manley International airport bases in Trinidad and Jamaica, which “will have a serious, negative impact on the airlines’ services in 2015.”

A report carried by News Day’s business magazine out of Trinidad says the shortage of pilots is not the only issue confronting the airline, as there are a number of industrial matters between the pilots and CAL’s management.

WTO extends programme to help Caribbean trade

 GENEVA, Switzerland (CMC) -- The World Trade Organisation (WTO) says the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF), a multi-donor programme that helps the poorest countries, including in the Caribbean, will have its mandate extended into a new phase.

The WTO said the EIF Steering Committee made the decision.

"Trade can be an effective tool for economic growth and poverty reduction when the right conditions exist," said WTO Director General Roberto Azevêdo, in addressing the committee.

CARICOM Chair meets Chinese President - China, Bahamas pledge to boost cooperation

BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping and Bahamas Prime Minister Perry Christie pledged to boost cooperation between the two countries as they met on Wednesday at the Great Hall of the People.

"China attaches great importance to ties with the Bahamas," Xi told the visiting prime minister, who is in Beijing to attend the opening ceremony of the first ministerial meeting of the China-CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) Forum on Thursday.

Latin America and Caribbean growth to pick up slightly in 2015

Latin America and the Caribbean's economic growth might recover modestly to 2.2 percent in 2015, up from 1.3 percent in 2014, its lowest rate since last decade's global financial crisis. Despite the slowdown, the region has managed to maintain its gains against poverty, said Inter-American Development Bank President Luis Alberto Moreno.

Jamaicans agree on CCJ as final court of appeal - Don Anderson poll

KINGSTON, Jamaica January 7, 2015- As the Parliament continues its debate on whether Jamaica should establish the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) as its final court of appeal, almost half  the respondents in a recent Don Anderson poll, commissioned by the RJR Communications Group, feel the country should do away with the Privy Council and establish the CCJ.
