Jamaican to head US Defence Intelligence Agency

UNITED States Marine Corps Major General Vincent R Stewart will assume duties as the 20th director of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and commander of the Joint Functional Component Command for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (JFCC-ISR) on Friday, the DIA has announced on its website.

Major General Stewart, a Jamaican who attended Kingston College and who entered the Marine Corps in 1981, will take up his new post after a 10:00 am ceremony scheduled for at DIA Headquarters, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, Washington, DC.

Bahamas Eyes Future as Stem Cell Hub

The Bahamas has big plans for stem cell medicine.

The country’ has officially launched its “stem cell industry,” Health Minister Dr Perry Gomez announced at a ceremony last week.

The first stem cell operation to have received provisional approval by the government is the Okyanos Heart Institute in Grand Bahama, which Gomez said was “state-of-the-art and the most sophisticated ‘Cath Lab’ in the entire English-speaking Caribbean.”

Gov’t express confidence in Tablets in Schools Programme

The Jamaican Government says it has taken note of concerns raised by the Auditor-General about the future viability of  the Tablets in Schools programme, but has vowed to proceed with full implementation of the initiative.

According to Julian Robinson, Minister of State for Technology,  the pilot project is under constant review and deficiencies will be addressed.

RADA Officers to be Trained in Greenhouse Production

KINGSTON, January 20, 2015- As the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) positions itself to expand the island’s agricultural productive capacity, 26 of its extension officers will be sent for training in greenhouse production techniques beginning in February.

Paulwell Reaffirms Number Portability By May 31, 2015

Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Phillip Paulwell, has reiterated Government’s commitment to implement number portability in Jamaica by May 31, next year.

“We have now gazetted all the rules dealing with number portability and I have mandated the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) and all the providers that come May 31, 2015, we will have full portability,” Minister Paulwell said.

Marley’s contribution to Jamaica priceless – Jamaica Tourism Minister

KINGSTON, January 14, 2015 - Tourism and Entertainment Minister Dr. Wykeham McNeill, has described as “priceless,” the contribution of late Reggae legend, Robert “Bob” Nesta Marley, to Jamaica’s music legacy.

“I am often asked the value of Reggae music and…Bob Marley to Jamaica and Jamaica’s tourism, and I would say it is immeasurable…it’s not something that you can put a figure to,” he said.

St. Kitts-Nevis Parliament dissolved, paving way for general elections

Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis Dr. Denzil Douglas on Friday announced he had advised the Governor General to dissolve Parliament with immediate effect.

The Prime Minister’s announcement, made on the steps of Government Headquarters, followed an emergency sitting of Parliament on Friday which passed a resolution paving the way for the Governor General to sign a proclamation which  realigned the constituency boundaries.  The Prime Minister said an election date will be announced later.

Barbados launching renewable energy education
