CANANEWS  - The Jamaica Parliament will decide on April 28 whether or not Jamaica should join the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Appeal as its final court replacing the London-based Privy Council.

Gov’t Looking at Developing Pharmaceuticals from Fish Trimmings

KINGSTON, January 21, 2015 - The Government is looking to partner with Japan to explore the development of pharmaceutical items from fish trimmings.

Minister of State for Agriculture, Labour, and Social Security, Hon. Luther Buchanan, made the disclosure at a seminar held on January 21 at the Medallion Hall Hotel in St. Andrew, which looked at 20 years of cooperation between Japan and CARICOM.

Education Ministry Confident Of Achieving Literacy Target

The Ministry of Education is expressing confidence in attaining its goal of 85 per cent of students in the grade four age cohort achieving mastery of literacy in 2015. An optimistic Portfolio Minister, Rev. Ronald Thwaites, notes that the country is now 7.6 per cent away from achieving this target. “The final measurement will be made at this year’s sitting of the Grade Four Literacy Test,” he said.

CANTO Youth Forum to be hosted in Suriname next week

The Caribbean Association of National Telecommunications Organization (CANTO’)s 1st Youth Forum themed `The Caribbean Startup- Promoting Youth Entrepreneurship and Innovation’ will be launched on 27 January, 2015 during the organisation’s 31st Annual General Meeting and Mini Expo from 25– 29 January, 2015.  This event expects to bring Youths from all around the Caribbean, together with established entrepreneurs, innovators, investors and other stakeholders in ICT at Hotel Torarica, in Paramaribo Suriname.

WHO wants Caribbean countries to take urgent action in addressing non-communicable diseases

GENEVA, Switzerland (CMC) –The World Health Organization (WHO) is urging Caribbean countries to take urgent action to meet global targets to reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

According to a new WHO report, 16 million people die prematurely annually – before the age of 70 – from heart and lung diseases, stroke, cancer and diabetes,

“The global community has the chance to change the course of the NCD epidemic,” said WHO Director-General Dr Margaret Chan in launching the “Global status report on non-communicable diseases 2014” report.

St Vincent PM wants new legislation to strengthen ICT sector

KINGSTOWN, St Vincent (CMC) – A three-day workshop examining technology and telecommunications issues in the Eastern Caribbean began in St Vincent on Monday with Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves underscoring the need to enact legislation to develop the sector in the sub-region.

Gonsalves told delegates from Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia and the host country, St Vincent and the Grenadines that he hoped the conference would examine possible draft legislation that would reflect the current technological needs of the region.

CCJ observes 10th anniversary this year

The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) observes its 10th anniversary this year. The observance of the significant milestone was announced Tuesday by Mr Justice Adrian Saunders.

Justice Saunders said that the judges and administrative staff of the Court were “extremely proud” that for the last decade, we have been afforded the opportunity to serve the Region in implementing the historic mandate of the Court and in furthering the development of Caribbean jurisprudence.”
