Youth in Agriculture Farm Programme growing

For the first time in the three year history of the Youth in Agriculture Farm Programme, hosted by the Inter American Institute for Co-operation on Agriculture, (IICA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, and The Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council, there were 31 agricultural science students, from 9 Secondary schools, who were awarded the Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) in Amenity Horticulture Level 1.

Praedial larceny undermining agricultural sector

PRAEDIAL larceny has proven to be a constant disincentive to agriculture production, says CEO of the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS), James Paul.

The BAS is therefore appealing to the authorities to move quickly in introducing legislation to address this issue.

Furthermore, the BAS feels the legislative changes and enforcement initiatives being asked for, is needed not later, but now.

CARIFORUM and EU discussing projects for funding

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Oct 28, CMC – The Steering Committees of the CARICOM Single Market Economy (CSME) and CARIFORUM-EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) Standby Facilities are considering proposals for eight projects for funding.

The two-day meeting, which begins here on Tuesday, is being held at the Barbados-based Caribbean Development Bank (CDB). The Steering Committees comprise representatives of European Commission, The Guyana-based Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat and senior public servants.

IMF warns of possible changes to PetroCaribe arrangement

Montego Bay, St James — A director, Western Hemisphere department, International Monetary Fund (IMF), Alejandro Werner says the dip in the price of oil will benefit much of the region's current accounts, so long as it doesn't inadvertently lead to the end of the PetroCaribe arrangement.

Addressing the 2014 High Level Caribbean Forum under the theme "Unlocking Economic Growth," in Montego Bay Werner said "That might trigger obviously either an important policy adjustment in Venezuela that might imply some adjustment with PetroCaribe," he explained.

OAS says cyber vulnerabilities affect wide range of targets in the Caribbean

WASHINGTON, Oct 26, CMC - The Organization of American States (OAS) says cyber vulnerabilities continue to affect a “wide range of targets” in the Caribbean.

OAS Assistant Secretary General, Albert Ramdin, said while member-states are “ever-more familiar with cyber security threats, this awareness hasn’t stopped cyber vulnerabilities from continuing to affect a wide range of targets in the region”.

New study urges the Caribbean to do more to facilitate trade

WASHINGTON,USA - A new study by the Inter American Development Bank (IDB) is urging Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) to do more to facilitate trade in order to boost exports.

"Three years of sluggish growth in the exports of Latin America and the Caribbean make it urgent to implement policies that facilitate trade," notes the study, entitled "Trade and Integration Monitor 2014".

It notes that the fall in international demand and in the prices of many basic goods that are exported from the region highlight pre-existing vulnerabilities in the external sector.

Strengthening of CARICOM/Japan relationship

THE foundation for a solid relationship between Japan and CARICOM has been laid, and Prime Minister Freundel Stuart is looking forward to the strengthening of that association.

Stuart made those comments recently, when Ambassador and Special Envoy for CARICOM-Japan Friendship Year, Ken Shimanouchi, paid him a courtesy call at Ilaro Court.

Dominica lunches environment project with World Bank funds

ROSEAU, Dominica, Oct 21, CMC – Dominica has launched a multi-million dollar project it hopes will enhance the island’s ability to deal with the impact of climate change.
