CARICOM Secretariat Will Host the 4th Caribbean Sustainable Energy Forum (CSEF), 12-14 November 2014

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat will be partnering with the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) through the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (REETA) Project in hosting the Fourth Caribbean Sustainable Energy Forum (CSEF). The Forum will be held from the 13-14 November 2014 at the Office of Caribbean Development Bank in St. Michael, Barbados.

CACRICOM, UNFPA framework aims to reduce adolescent pregnancy in region

ADOLESCENT pregnancy in the Caribbean could decline by 20 per cent between 2015 and 2019 if an initiative by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) succeeds.

Last year, UNFPA and Caricom unveiled a strategic framework aimed at reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies in countries of the English and Dutch-speaking Caribbean.

Drugs and tourism combine to raise HIV risk in Caribbean

New research shows how drugs in the Dominican Republican’s touristy areas present barriers to preventing HIV.

The Caribbean has the second highest global HIV prevalence in the world outside of Sub-Saharan Africa, with HIV/AIDS as leading cause of death among people aged 20–59 years within the region.

Particularly hard-hit are the Dominican Republic (DR) and Haiti, on the island of Hispaniola, which account for approximately 70 percent of all people living with HIV in the Caribbean region.

The report examines a host of factors, including health and survival, educational attainment, economic participation and opportunity and political empowerment.

Government to adopt Red Stripe technology in Cassava Production

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Nov. 4, 2014 - Government will shortly be adopting the technology used by Red Stripe in its large-scale cassava production, so that an islandwide cassava industry can be sustained as the technology being being utilized is delivering the kind of yields that will make the industry economical.

Minister of Agriculture, Derrick Kellier pointed out that with the Red Stripe technology “We will be moving from a low of 15 tonnes per acre, to about 60 to 70 tonnes. That is tremendous to get the kind of productivity that we need to make it viable.”

CXC to launch online store

The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) in collaboration with Macmillan will launch CXC’s online commercial presence called the CXC Store at http://www.cxc-store.com on Friday 7 November during a concert in Jamaica.

The launch will be held at Jamaica College auditorium starting at 10:00 am with over 350 students from schools across Jamaica in attendance.

BVI to host inaugural OECS environmental sustainability meeting

ROAD, TOWN, BVI -- The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) ministers responsible for environmental portfolios will meet in Road Town, Tortola, in the British Virgin Islands this week for their inaugural meeting since the Revised Treaty of Basseterre came into force in 2011.

The meeting, preceded by the opening of an exhibition on climate change on Monday, opens on Tuesday with a high-level ceremony, at which addresses will be presented by BVI premier, Dr Orlando Smith, and Governor John Duncan.

EU, Spain, IDB to help Caribbean develop renewable energy

NEW YORK, Sept 29, CMC – The Inter America Development Bank (IDB) says it is prepared to work with donor organizations and countries to avoid duplication on projects as the Caribbean seeks to reinforce collaboration in the field of renewable energy.
