New strain of Chikungunya in Brazil could spur North American outbreak

BAHIA, Brazil, Wednesday November 12, 2014 (AMG) — The Chikungunya outbreak which continues to affect thousands of Caribbean residents since it first appeared in St. Martin last year has been relatively self-limiting in the United States, due to the fact that the current strain only spreads through the Aedes egypti mosquito vector, which is uncommon on the US Eastern seaboard.

Improve standards to generate growth – Minister Darcy Boyce

(Caribbean Export Development Agency) Public and private sector entities across the region have been urged to improve business processes to best standards, in an effort to generate economic growth and employment.

According to Darcy Boyce, Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister of Barbados, the region cannot afford to wait on projects to be developed and executed only at the regional level in an effort to build economic resilience.

Executive Director of the Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export) Pamela Coke-Hamilton identified agro-processed goods and the cultural industries, particularly the latter, as key export earning areas for the Caribbean.

CARICOM foreign ministers to meet in Japan

KINGSTON Jamaica  — Caribbean Community (CARICOM) foreign ministers including Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade AJ Nicholson will meet with their Japanese counterpart on Friday for talks aimed at strengthening the relations between the 15-member regional grouping and Japan.

According to a joint statement issued on Monday, the November 15 meeting is a follow-up to the first Japan-CARICOM Summit held in July “and are expected t enhance collaboration on various gobal agenda, including environment issues and climate change”.
