Ffolkes Abrahams Hails CARICOM Consumer Protection System

Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Hon. Sharon Ffolkes Abrahams, says that the CARICOM online consumer-protection warning system has the potential to foster development of regional economies, while protecting consumers from unsafe goods.

  She was addressing a sensitisation workshop on the CARICOM Rapid Alert System for Information Exchange on Dangerous Goods (CARREX), held on Friday (September 25), at the Knutsford Court Hotel in New Kingston.

Jamaica reeling under Chikungunya virus

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Sept 29, CMC – The Jamaica government has acknowledged that the outbreak of the mosquito-borne Chikungunya virus is taking a toll on the country's education system with reports of a significant increase in student and teacher absenteeism.

While unable to give exact figures, Education Minister Ronald Thwaites, said schools in the Corporate Area and eastern parishes were the most affected.

EU, Spain, IDB to help Caribbean develop renewable energy

PAHO to launch mobile app to measure cardiovascular risk

WASHINGTON, Sep. 28, CMC – The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) will on Monday launch a new app for mobile devices and computers that calculates the risk of cardiovascular disease among Caribbean nationals.

 

The launch will take place in recognition of World Heart Day, celebrated yearly on September 29.

The app is based on a World Health Organization (WHO) formula for estimating cardiovascular risk that is appropriate for most countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

World Bank strategy to promote growth in Dominica Republic

Washington, Sep. 25, CMC - The World Bank Board of Executive Directors on Thursday endorsed a new strategy to support the Dominican Republic’s efforts to broaden economic and social opportunities for citizens.

The strategy offers a new lending program of US$550 million and advisory services over the next four years .

Guyana reports record export of rice

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Sept 26, CMC – Guyana says it will export an estimated 400,000 tonnes of rice by the end of October, the highest ever in the country’s history.

Agriculture Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy said after many troubling years, Guyana now has the potential to o again emerge as the bread basket of the Caribbean and that while efforts are being made to cap imports, the country increasing exports.

Badly needed: A Caribbean democracy

Last week, the University of the West Indies (UWI) held a two-day conference entitled 'Beyond Westminster in the Caribbean: Critiques, Challenges and Reform'.

The objective was to examine the practice and contemporary processes of political reform in the region, assessing attempts to modify, regenerate, or overhaul the Westminster model of governance in the post-independence Caribbean.

US promises assistance to Caribbean to reduce impact of climate change

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, Sept 17, CMC – The United States says it is working with the Eastern Caribbean countries to reduce their vulnerability and increase their resilience to the impact of climate change.

Jonathan Conly, the Mission Director for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, said that Washington is providing assistance to increase the capacity of technical and educational institutions in a number of areas.
