Call to scale up climate partnership for small islands

Caribbean news. 01 September 2014 – The heads of three regional organisations, together with the Commonwealth, have called for the strengthening of a global partnership to support climate change planning and finance in small island developing states.
The Climate Resilient Islands Partnership was formed in 2011 and launched at the Rio+20 summit to support island nations, many of whom face existential threats as a result of climate change and rising sea levels, by providing a facility for sharing learning and providing mutual technical assistance.

Dominica screens West Africa students for Ebola Disease

Caribbean news. ROSEAU, Dominica (CMC)– Dominica says while it will not impose a travel ban on people coming from Africa, it will screen new students arriving here from West Africa where an outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus has resulted in more than a thousand deaths.
Chief Medical Officer, Dr David Johnson, speaking on the state-owned DBS radio, said that a meeting had been held involving various stakeholders to look at the threat the virus, for which there is no known cure, poses to the island.

2014 Human Development Report Launched in Guyana

“Sustaining Human Progress: Reducing Vulnerabilities and Building Resilience” is the title of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) 2014 Human Development Report.
As such, UNDP Guyana launched the report on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at the Guyana International Conference Centre in the presence of Representatives of the Government, Parliamentary Political Parties, Diplomatic Corps, United Nations Agencies, Civil Society and Media. The report was presented to Minister of Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh by UNDP Resident Representative (ag), Ms. Chisa Mikami.

UN Major Group of Children and Youth Selects SIDS Youth Focal Points

At the end of March, the UN Major Group of Children and Youth announced a list of young people who were selected to serve as Focal Points for Small Island Developing States for the period of 2014 – 2016.

The UN Major Group for Children and Youth is the space within international negotiations on Sustainable Development for Children and Youth. We represent diverse voices and are established by various UN resolutions.

The Caribbean is represented through three youth leaders:

CARICOM approach needed to consumer protection, says Barbados minister

There is a need for greater co-operation and coordination of action of regional bodies with regard to the issue of protecting the health and safety of consumers.

Barbados industry minister, Donville Inniss, who is also responsible for consumer matters, expressed this view as he gave remarks on Thursday at the opening of a consultation on the CARICOM Rapid Alert System for Exchange of Information on the Dangerous Non-Food Consumer Goods.

Government signs $36M agreement with China

Antigua & Barbuda has signed a $200 million RNB or US $36 million agreement with the Chinese government, officials report.

It follows Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s official visit to the Asian country. Part of the deal is for financing the Deep Water Harbour Development Project, which includes a cruise ship section, hotel and museum. An interest-free US $4.8 million loan for projects is also included in the package. Government won’t have to begin repayments until 2024.

OAS Permanent Council Urged Haiti to Hold Overdue Elections and Convened a Special General Assembly on Strategic Vision

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) today adopted a Declaration calling on the three branches of government of Haiti to comply with the agreement knows as El Rancho and to call legislative and municipal elections by the end of 2014, and also convened a Special General Assembly on the Strategic Vision for the Organization to be held on Friday, September 12.

St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force Capt. Graduate from Guyana Course

Ten Officers, including one from the St .Kitts and Nevis Defence Force (SKNDF), have graduated from the Guyana Defence Force Senior Command and Staff Course (SCSC) Number 13. Having successfully completed the course.

St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force Capt. P. Kayode Sutton and his colleagues are now equipped to command Units and Sub-Units and perform Staff duties at senior levels of the GDF and the SKNDF.
