BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, July 22nd 2014 (CUOPM) – The Caribbean aspires to be become the first region in the world to end AIDS.

St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas also told the 20th International AIDS Conference in Melbourne, Australia on Tuesday there is need for AIDS to be positioned within the broad context of health, poverty and equality.

UAE Investor Signs Agreement For $120 Million Hotel Project in Antigua

Antigua Prime Minister Gaston Browne has signed a memorandum of agreement with Sheikh Tariq bin Faisal Al Qassimi on a $120 million hotel project, the government announced.

The agreement with the United Arab Emirates-based investor was signed on Sunday after negotiations following Browne’s trip to Brazil last week.

Al Qassimi signed the agreement on behalf of Al Caribi Development, which will develop a five-star branded luxury resort project on Morris Bay near the island’s famous Curtain Bluff hotel.

Foreign Minister Nisbett leads St. Kitts and Nevis delegation to First CARICOM-Turkey Consultation and Cooperation Meeting

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JULY 21ST 2014 (CUOPM) –St. Kitts and Nevis’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Patrice Nisbett is leading a four-person delegation to the ground-breaking First CARICOM-Turkey Consultation and Cooperation Meeting which concludes Monday in Istanbul, Turkey.

This Meeting is the final culmination of talks that began in July 2013 when the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, the Hon.  Ahmet Davutoğlu, first extended the invitation to the Foreign Ministers of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Secretary General.

Haiti, Turks and Caicos Close to Signing MoU on Migration Issues

The Turks and Caicos Islands and Haiti are close to signing a memorandum of understanding to deal with the continued problem of irregular migration from Haiti to the TCI, according to Minister of Border Control and Labour Ricardo Gardiner.

Speaking at the 2014 budget address, the Minister said the two sides had produced the final draft of a memorandum of understanding and “will be signed shortly.”

Progression of the pact is being facilitated by the office of Turks and Caicos Governor Peter Beckingham, he said, but “is being driven from my office.”

Caribbean Export Awards €2.9 Million to Firms

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon Visits Haiti, Dominican Republic

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon begins a visit to Haiti and the Dominican Republic on Monday, the world body announced.

Ban is set to meet with senior government officials and “get a first-hand look at programmes designed to improve health and reduce poverty,” according to a UN statement.

The Haiti portion of Ban’s trip is to include a visit to a village in the Central department, where Haiti Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe will launch the country’s new “Total Sanitation Campaign,” which aims to improve sanitation and rural hygiene interventions.

Caribbean nationals urged to reduce salt intake

UNITED NATIONS, CMC — The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has urged Caribbean nationals and others in the Americas to decrease salt intake to help reduce hypertension - the leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

"Salt reduction is recognised as the most cost-effective intervention for population-based prevention of hypertension, and it is one of the

WHO (World Health Organisation) best buys," said PAHO's Dominican-born Director Dr Carissa F Etienne, last week.

Barbados Developing Intellectual Property Strategic Plan

Barbados’ government has formulated a national intellectual property strategic plan, it said this week.

The plan, which is being developed with the assistance of the World Intellectual Property Organization, aims to make the country’s economy “more competitive globally,” the government said.

According to Heather Clarke, registrar of Barbados’ Corporate Affairs and Intellectual Property Office, “such competitiveness could only be achieved through creativity, productivity and innovation in the economic, cultural and social sectors.”
