Suriname to host ACP heads of government summit

PARAMARIBO, Suriname -- Suriname is on track to welcome the largest gathering of heads of state in its history from November 6 to 7, when it hosts the eighth African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States Summit of heads of state and government under the theme “Repositioning the ACP Group to fulfill the aspirations of our Peoples”, according to Foreign Minister Winston Lackin.

Caribbean to lobby for softer terms at UK Forum

Caribbean foreign ministers are to Monday lobby United Kingdom (UK) Foreign Secretary, William Hague to ask the G-20 for softer borrowing terms although the income rating for the group of largely former British colonies has gone up, a senior member of the delegation said.

Internet exchange point to be launched in Jamaica by August

KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) -- Jamaica is expected to benefit significantly from an internet exchange point (IXP) facility, which the ministry of science, technology, energy and mining expects to have in place by August.

The IXP enables Internet traffic routing within the country where the provision exists, instead of through external providers, as currently is the case with Jamaica.

The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party on Thursday 13th June overwhelmingly defeated the United Progressive Party of Former Prime Minister W. Baldwin Spencer. The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party won 14 seats and 3 seats went to the United Progressive Party.

Jamaica to Decriminalize Possession of Small Amounts of Marijuana

In a major shift, Jamaica has announced that the country’s Cabinet has approved a proposal that would decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana.

The proposed amendment to the country’s Dangerous Drugs Act ((which has been approved by Cabinet but still needs to go be introduced and approved by Parliament)) would mean that the possession of small quantities of marijuana for personal use would be a ticketable infraction and not a criminal offence.

Discrimination Over Sexual Preference Blights Those Seeking Medical Help

TRAINING gaps among health and social service workers contribute to an environment of stigma and discrimination for men who have sex with men and sex workers, according to an international report.

#The study conducted by Family Health International’s Communication for Change project, and funded by USAID/PEPFAR, revealed that nine people were reportedly denied medical services because they identified as MSM (sex with men), and 25 people were denied medical services because they were known or suspected to be sex workers.

Regional Project Pushes Employment Through Creativity

Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 10, 2014 (SKNIS): The Creativity for Employment and Business Opportunities (CEBO) project launched its six-day Training of Trainers Workshop today (June 10) in St. Kitts.
