OAS Statement on the Diagnostic Study on the Identification of Haitian Migrants Residents in the Dominican Republic

The Organization of American States (OAS) drafted the “Diagnostic on the Identification of Haitian Migrants Residents in the Dominican Republic” in response to a request from President Danilo Medina, of the Dominican Republic, and Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe, of Haiti.

The "Diagnostic" is a working document. The OAS has requested that the appropriate authorities from each Government offer their observations and suggestions.

Once it receives that input, if so requested, the Hemispheric Institution will seek financial assistance from the international community.

PM Browne Makes Preparations to Confer the Honour of National Hero on Former Prime Minister the Honourable Lester Bryant Bird

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua and Barbuda -  30th June, 2014…….The country’s newly elected leader, Prime Minister the Honourable Gaston Browne has announced that his government will be taking immediate steps to have former Prime Minister the Honourable Lester Bird conferred with the honour of National Hero of Antigua and Barbuda.

Prime Minister Browne made the announcement following the swearing in of the veteran politician as Senior Minister in the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda.

Browne to chair Caricom meeting in Antigua

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government are on island this week to look at issues affecting the Caribbean Community and to plot the path for the next five years.

The occasion is the 35th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of the Caribbean Community, which will run from July 1-4.

Ambassador Dr Clarence Henry said the meeting is a significant event.

Caribbean Export Creates Opportunities for Regional Trade between CARIFORUM and the FCOR & OCT Territories

The Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export) hosted a Business Forum on June 25th, 2014 for private sector firms as well as other key stakeholders from CARIFORUM, the French Caribbean Outermost regions (FCORs) and EU Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs) in the Caribbean, with the aim of facilitating greater trade between the territories on the island of Grand Cayman.

Dominican Republic Gets $100 Million Loan For Health Sector

The Dominican Republic will soon be receiving a $100 million loan from the Inter-American Development Bank following its approval this week.

The loan aims to boost health care in the country through “investments designed to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of spending in the sector and improving the quality of services aimed at the country’s poorest people,” according to a statement from the IDB.

The financing is part of a credit line for projects that could be augmented to as much as $300 million, the IDB said.

Fifth Meeting of the CDEMA Council will convene in Barbados

Bridgetown, Barbados, June 26, 2014, (CDEMA) – The Fifth (5th) Meeting of the CDEMA Council of Ministers will convene on Friday, June 27, 2014 at the Hilton Hotel in Barbados. The meeting will be attended by Ministers and Permanent Secretaries with responsibility for disaster management within the CDEMA Participating States.  The Council is the highest level decision making body in the CDEMA governance structure and will discuss several key matters requiring their approval and endorsement for implementation by the CDEMA Coordinating Unit and Participating States.

US Vice President announces launch of Caribbean Energy Security Initiative

News Americas Now, New York, NY, June 24, 2014- United States Vice President Joe Biden recently announced the launch of the Caribbean Energy Security Initiative. The initiative consists of a portfolio of activities designed with the objective of supporting the Caribbean on energy.

The Caribbean Energy Security Initiative includes (i) increasing access to finance, good governance and diversification, (ii) transforming the Caribbean, one island at a time and (iii) maximizing the impact of existing donor efforts.

Jamaica Set to Launch Internet Exchange Point in August

KINGSTON, Jamaica  – Jamaica is expected to benefit significantly from an Internet exchange point facility, which the ministry of science, technology, energy and mining expects to have in place by August.
The IXP enables Internet traffic-routing within the country where the provision exists, instead of through external providers, as currently is the case with Jamaica.
