Regional commissioners and military chiefs discuss crime and security

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad -- The CARICOM Implementation Agency for Crime and Security convened the 18th joint meeting of the standing committees of commissioners of police and military chiefs (CPMC) on Friday 2 May 2014 in Port of Spain, Trinidad. This executive level forum of CARICOM commissioners of police and military chiefs forms a critical part of the regional security architecture; where all the regional operational heads meet jointly to review current and evolving security threats and advance security initiatives to reduce crime and promote security in the region.

Haiti: World Bank Approves $58 Million Grant For Agriculture

The World Bank has approved a $58 million grant targeting improved access to local markets and services for agriculture in Haiti.

The grant from the International Development Association will reach about 190,000 rural producers, investors and members of agricultural organizations, the bank said in a release.

Barbados to Develop “Blueprint” For Science, Technology Education

Barbados’ government says it is planning to develop a “blueprint” to reform its Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) teaching across its education system.

Labour, Social Security and Human Resource Development Minister Dr Esther Byer Suckoo pointed this week to what she saw as the “need to create a culture of research, innovation and entrepreneurship” in Barbados.

Caribbean Classrooms of the Future Initiative Launched in Trinidad and Tobago with the OAS, Virtual Educa and the Private Sector

A series of technologically advanced classrooms, designed to benefit thousands of students and educators in schools across the Caribbean, is being launched following a commitment from international telecommunications company Samsung to the Organization of American States (OAS) and Virtual Educa.

The initiative follows the lead taken by the government of Trinidad and Tobago and its Ministry of Education to establish "smart" classrooms in partnership with domestic and international information and communication technology (ICT) partners.

As part of the two-day Meeting of Regional Partners in Water and Wastewater, the Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C), the United Nations Environment Programme, Caribbean Regional Coordinating Unit (UNEP-CAR/RCU) and the Global Environment Facility’s Caribbean Regional Fund for Wastewater Management (GEF CReW) partnered to host a specialKnowledge Sharing Session on New Tools and Resources for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in the Caribbean.

Bermuda Premier Resigns

Bermuda Premier Craig Cannonier has tendered his resignation, Governor George Fergusson confirmed on Monday evening.

In a statement, Fergusson said Cannonier “called on me this evening and tendered his resignation, which I have accepted.”

“I have asked the Deputy Premier, the Hon. Michael H. Dunkley, JP, MP, to carry out the role of Acting Premier on an interim basis,” he said.

Later Monday night, Fergusson said Dunkley informed him of his intention to form a government.

CARPHA’s New Laboratory Promises Faster Detection and Response to Control Disease Outbreaks in the Caribbean

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, May 14, 2014:  The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) is now better equipped to perform faster and safer detection and response to infectious disease outbreaks in the Region.  Thanks to the Government of Canada’s Global Partnership Programme (GPP), which donated a fully equipped Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory to CARPHA, the first of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean.

Grenada PM concerned about slow growth of ICT in CARICOM

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada (GIS) -- Grenada’s prime minister, Dr Keith Mitchell, has expressed concern about the slow growth in information and communications technology (ICT) within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) compared to the rest of the world.

Mitchell said, while ICT is growing in the region, it is yet to seriously impact on regional economies.

Mitchell, the prime minister responsible for science and technology within CARICOM, was addressing participants at the opening of a workshop on Technopreneurship currently ongoing in Tobago.

St Lucia Government Planning to Enact Creative Industries Bill

St Lucia will move to enact a Creative Industries Bill for the country during the upcoming parliamentary session, according to St Lucia Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy.

The bill would follow the lead set by Barbados, which led the region in enacting its landmark Cultural Industries Development Bill.

“This is an important vehicle for generating employment for young persons as well as providing for a positive social environment,” Louisy said in her throne speech, without giving specifics on the nature of the bill.
