SURINAME-CRIME-Woman arrested for smuggling cocaine in private part

PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – Police Monday confirmed the arrested a 24-year-old woman after a “cocaine ball” had been found in her vagina as she was preparing to board a flight to Amsterdam.


Police said the cocaine weighed 2, 317 grammesand was discovered after members of the Anti-Narcotics Brigade carried out the search on Sunday.

ST. VINCENT-CRIME-Police probe second murder within 48 hours

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – Police are probing the second murder within a 48 hour period after the bullet riddled body of a 25-year-old man was found along the bank of a stream on Monday.


Police said that the body of Roger Bramble was found in an area called “Quata” and that residents in the Brighton area had reported hearing gunshots, but members of the Rapid Response Unit (“Black Squad”) who responded to the call found nothing.

More large-scale marijuana cultivation discovered in Bahamas

FREEPORT, Bahamas -- Just two weeks after a $16.8 million discovery in Grand Bahama, police in The Bahamas uncovered another cultivated marijuana field in the same area on Thursday, when officers of the Drug Enforcement Unit, along with US counterparts acting on information, went to another undeveloped area in East Grand Bahama.

Upon arrival at the location, they discovered a number of marijuana plants ranging between one and five feet in height.

Police confirmed that the plots contained approximately 75,000 plants, with a street value of $7.5 million.

New ferry for Trinidad and Tobago

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad -- An additional inter-island ferry will soon be available for passengers to travel back and forth between the sister isles of Trinidad and Tobago.

The government is expected to invest at least $48 million annually to provide this newest service on board the MV Super-Fast Galicia. The service is expected to be a hefty $10 million less than the lease of the TT Warrior Spirit.

New therapy for advanced prostate cancer available in Trinidad and Tobago

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad -- The Chemistry, Food and Drugs Division of the Trinidad Tobago Ministry of Health approved the introduction of Abiraterone Acetate to the country, the first-orally administered androgen synthesis inhibitor (testosterone) medication for the treatment of patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer.

ANTIGUA-HOUSING-Government unveils new housing project

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – The ruling United Progressive Party (UPP) says more than 1,000 nationals will be employed at a factory that will begin constructing homes on the island.


"The construction of the Baupanel factory also forms one component of the UPP’s strategy for job creation and economic diversification. The benefit to the local economy of the new factory is estimated at EC$200 million (one EC dollar = US$0.37 cents), and when complete the factory will employ well over 1000 Antiguans and Barbudans,” said UPP Spokesperson, Malaka Parker."

HAITI-MEDIA-Media and political groups critical of CONATEL directive

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – Political and media groups have criticised a decision by the National Council of Telecommunications (CONATEL) that it may take drastic actions against some media establishments “broadcasting systematically false information likely to disturb public order”.


In a statement, CONATEL said it was reminding media houses that the government has the monopoly on telecommunication services and that Article 6 of the official Decree outlines the penalties for any establishment contravening the measures.

BARBADOS-LABOUR-No breakthrough in talks to end sugar workers strike

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Labour Minister Dr Esther Byer Suckoo is expected to continue talks here on Tuesday after talks with officials of the of the Barbados Agricultural Management Corporation (BAMC) and the Barbados Workers Union (BWU) failed to end a six-day strike by sugar workers on Monday.


Workers at the island’s lone sugar factory Portvale have been off the job for the past week protesting the manner in which 50 of their colleagues at the Andrews Sugar Factory were retrenched by the BAMC last month.

ST. LUCIA-ECONOMY-St. Lucia government concerned over high non-performing bank loans

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony says he is concerned about EC$150 million (One EC dollar = US$0.37 cents) in non-performing bank loans, vowing that the problem has to be resolved.


“This is not an issue to be tackled by one country alone, but by all of us in the financial space that we occupy,” Anthony said as he addressed the 50th anniversary of Scotiabank operations in St. Lucia.

IMF to decide on Grenada program in early May

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada (GIS) -- The International Monetary Fund (IMF) wants to meet early next month to approve Grenada’s home grown structural adjustment program.

The IMF official who will be chairing the meeting has asked Grenada’s permanent secretary in the ministry of finance, Timothy Antoine, to work with his team for a meeting in early May.
Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell, just back from talks with the IMF and World Bank in Washington, welcomed the news, saying government is eager to see resources start flowing before the end of May.
