GRENADA-POLITICS-Grenada tells UN of moves to empower vulnerable members of society

UNITED NATIONS, CMC – The Grenada government Tuesday said it is determined to adopt policies to ensure the empowerment of the vulnerable members of its population.

"Grenada's commitment is only limited by its resources. And in that regard, the support of our international partners will be crucial for us to achieve the stated goals," Social Services Minister Delma Thomas told  the 47th International Conference on Population and Development attended by delegates of over 150 countries.

GUYANA-POLITICS-Opposition politician resigns from minority party

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – A senior official of the minority opposition Alliance for Change (AFC) has resigned but left open the possibility of returning to active politics in Guyana.

AFC executive member, Sasenarine Singh, said his resignation is of immediate effect and was due to “personal reasons.”

Singh said he wanted to wish the opposition party continued success “as it seeks to lead our people out of underdevelopment and away from the politics of nepotism, crony capitalism and pettiness.

GUYANA-BUDGET-Opposition politicians critical of 2014-15 budget

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Leaders of the two opposition parties in Parliament have criticised the GUY$220 billion (One Guyana dollar = US$0.004 cents) budget presented by Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh late last month.

Opposition Leader David Granger described the fiscal package as having nothing for Guyanese nationals, saying it did not take into account the situation regarding the poor in the country.

CARIBBEAN-FINANCE-OECS countries benefit from World Bank-financed credit union project

WASHINGTON, CMC – The World Bank says the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) has benefitted from an initiative to strengthen accountability within the non-banking financial sector.

It said with credit unions being “key players’ within the nine-member sub-regional grouping, the “Strengthening the Accountability of the Non-Bank Financial Sector in the OECS” has benefitted from a US$455,000 grant from its Institutional Development Fund (IDF).

CARIBBEAN-POPULATION-OAS completes digitalization of civil registry in six Caribbean countries

WASHINGTON, CMC – The Organization of American States (OAS) says it has completed a project to assist the Civil Registries in six Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries digitalize vital statistical information.

The OAS said that   through its subsidiary, Universal Civil Identity Program in the Americas (PUICA), it completed the project in Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The purpose of the discussions was to solicit the views of the Institutions on a direction, priorities, framework for implementation, areas of collaboration and the requirements for strategic management.

Robinson has died

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Express- Former President and Prime Minister Arthur NR Robinson has died.

Robinson, who had been ailing for several months, passed away at the St Clair medical Centre at around 6 a.m. He was 87.

His passing was confirmed by National Security Minister Gary Griffith who said a State funeral was being planned.

“Stigma and lack of knowledge about HIV & AIDS” was the topic of a compelling presentation by Pro-Chancellor of the University of Guyana Prem Misir, who launched his first health book in front of expatriates at the Consulate General of Guyana in New York City, recently.

The former associate public health epidemiologist of the Bureau of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control of NY City was motivated to write “HIV&AIDS Knowledge and Stigma in Guyana” after conducting interviews with N.Y. residents where discrimination and stigma among all races were evident.
