GUYANA-POLITICS-President reiterates need for opposition to ensure passage of anti-money laundering bill

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC - President Donald Ramotar has reiterated the need for the opposition parties to support the anti-money laundering legislation which he said is part of the international initiative to deal with terrorism and money laundering.
The opposition parties – A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance for Change (AFC) – control 33 of the 65-seats in the National Assembly and  have voted against the Anti Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AMLCFT) Amendment Bill.

ANTIGUA-POLITICS-Political parties continue public debate on date for general election

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer says he has no problem with supporters of the main opposition Antigua Labour Party (ALP) picketing his office on Friday maintaining that he would not be pressured into naming the date for the general election.
Addressing supporters of the ruling United Progressive Party (UPP) on Thursday night, Spncer, who is seeking a third consecutive term in office, again reiterated that the announcement for the date for the polls is being held up by two court matters initiated by the ALP and for which ruling are being awaited.

CARIBBEAN-TOURISM-Public and private sectors unite towards sustainability of tourist destinations

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, , CMC -In an effort to assist some of the world’s most popular travel destinations that are vulnerable to issues such as climate change and unsustainable development, the new Sustainable Destinations Alliance for the Americas (SDAA), was launched here on Thursday.
The alliance stems from the largest scale effort to date through which public and private entities have united to focus on destination sustainability in the Americas.

CARIBBEAN-REPARATION-CARICOM chairman to address reparation conference in United States

NEW YORK, CMC – Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) grouping, Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves of St. Vincent and the Grenadines will address an international forum in reparations in the United States next month.
Gonsalves will deliver the feature address at the April 19 forum titled “Revitalizing the Reparations Movement,” organized by the New York-based Institute of the Black World 21st Century (IBW).

Caribbean ICT Roadshow comes to Belize City

AARON HUMES Reporting: Belize City hosted the second leg of the third annual Caribbean Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Roadshow at the Radisson Hotel in Belize City today.

ICT is basically the use of modern technology such as computers, cellular phones and so on to link with software and other tools to more effectively access, store and transmit information.

The Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology and Public Utilities (MESTPU) is collaborating with the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) to take the displays and workshops across the country.

Kamla to talk food security at Chogm

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar arrived in Australia yesterday ahead of the 22nd sitting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which takes place from October 28 to 30 in Perth. The Prime Minister, who was accompanied by Foreign Minister Surujrattan Rambachan, left Trinidad last Wednesday. Commonwealth leaders will discuss, among others, issues related to food security, sustainable development and natural resource management—challenges that lie at the heart of national and global resilience for many member states.

ST. KITTS AND NEVIS LAUNCHES GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE PROJECT

Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 25, 2014 (SKNIS): Public Sector officials on St. Kitts and Nevis assembled at the Ocean Terrace Inn (OTI) conference room on Monday (March 24) for the launch of the Global Climate Change Alliance (GCCA) Project on Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Sustainable Land Management (SLM) in the Eastern Caribbean.

Project Technical Team Leader for the Global Climate Change Alliance Projects in all Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) member states, Chamberlain Emmanuel, gave a brief overview of the project. 

CARICOM and UNDP review relationship

NEW YORK, USA — Under the chairmanship of Suriname’s ambassador to the United Nations, Henry MacDonald, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) administrator, Helen Clark, former prime minister of New Zealand, held a meeting on Tuesday to review their relationship and set future goals.

The agenda included an overview of CARICOM-UNDP relations and UNDP restructuring and its implications for the Caribbean region.

MacDonald commended UNDP for its work in the region.
