PM Douglas leads on transformation of education and human resource development issues

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, MARCH 11TH 2014 (CUOPM) – An urgent call has been made to transform education and human resource development in the Caribbean, has come from the region’s leading statesman and Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.

Dr. Douglas was at the time on Monday afternoon making a presentation to the Presidents and Prime Ministers at the 25th CARICOM Inter-Sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government in St. Vincent on “Redefining Caribbean Education – an Urgent Imperative.”

Grenada PM Urges CARICOM on ICT

Continuing his push for information and communication technology development in the region, Grenada Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell urged CARICOM heads of government to enhance the region’s ability to compete on the “global stage.”

Mtichell, addressing the CARICOM Heads of Government meeting at the Buccament Bay hotel in St Vincent, outlined a five-pronged plan for ICT development.

Caricom to discuss AML impasse

Heads of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) are expected to discuss Guyana’s inability to pass the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (Amendment) 2013 Bill when they continue their intersessional meeting in St Vincent and the Grenadines today.

The St. Kitts and Nevis leader arrived at the Conference venue at 9:15 this morning.

International Women’s Day celebration galvanizes top-level political and grassroots support for change

(New York) At a high-powered UN event today to commemorate International Women’s Day, top international leaders called for full realization of women’s rights in the 21st century.

 

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:  “To every girl born today, and to every woman and girl on the planet, our message is that human rights are not a dream. They are they are a duty for which we must all work until they are universally realized.”

Crimea votes to join Russia, Obama orders sanctions

SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine/ BRUSSELS, (Reuters) - Crimea’s parliament voted yesterday to join Russia, and its Moscow-backed government set a referendum in 10 days, in a dramatic escalation of the crisis over the Ukrainian region that drew a sharp riposte from U.S. President Barack Obama. Obama ordered sanctions on those responsible for Moscow’s military intervention in Ukraine, including bans on travel to the United States and freezing of their U.S. assets.

Two dead in Venezuela violence as protests drag on

CARACAS, (Reuters) – A Venezuelan soldier and a motorcyclist died in a confused melee sparked by the opposition’s barricading of a Caracas street, officials said yesterday, boosting the death toll from nearly a month of violence to 20. Demonstrators have for weeks staged rallies and set up barricades to demand the resignation of President Nicolas Maduro, leading to clashes with security forces and government supporters.
